On the Rubicon this summer going up Cadillac Hill one of the CJ's in our group of 7 Jeep's lost front wheel drive. After checking the obvious possibilities we finally pulled the cover off his Dana 30 front axle. Every bolt attaching the ring gear to the carrier had wiggled out and were laying at the bottom of the pumpkin. Threads were shot on all the bolts so there was no screwing them back into the carrier. First suggestion was everybody take off there front diff cover and donate a bolt. Second solution was to weld the ring gear back to the carrier. By a unanimous vote welding was performed by one in the group with an on board welder. He welded a series of beads between the ring gear and the carrier and we refilled the diff with 10w30 because that's all we had. We had our doubts it would hold but it did and he drove all the way out until his transfer case gave out right before we hit the pavement. Easy tow back to Tahoe from there.

Zip ties will hold your pants up in a pinch in place of a belt.
Not jeep related but good to know.

In my cj7 daily driver I drove for 15 years I had a bin of a lot of parts. Coolant hoses, belts, water pump, fuel pump etc. I fixed the jeep many many times this way.

Pepper works great for rad leaks. I've used it a time or two in the past, and I've heard of the egg one also. Never had an egg handy when I needed it though. My allfire sure rad fix has been to jam a potato into the leaking spot of the radiator. Usually works better than the pepper for me. Also, supposedly, if you have a gas tank leak, rub a bar of soap across the hole, and it should seal it up. One time a guy was with us up the bush and he lost his drain plug. Noticed it when his oil light started flickering. I whittled him up a drain plug which we forced into the hole, and we all donated some oil from stuff we had laying in our junkers(which all burned oil) and drove out of there.

Another cool one was a friend of mine was out with his 64 Wagoneer, which he put power steering on. It blew the belt off, and he used his girl's nylons to wrap around the power steering pulley and crankshaft pulley. That was the most excitement that 230 Tornado ever got!

Boy, that had to be a tough decision.:D

It is a balancing act...what to carry....and, as noted, having the tools to make the repair as well. Much easier in a full size truck.

Jeepin....Nylons??? I'm confused, the two just don't seem to fit together. Good thing she had them, just shows, to go you, expect the unexpected.

DonX's Rubicon oil pan trail repair with J.B. weld. Everyone helped and harassed DonX as he removed the oil pan he abused on the trail.

    1. Bad fuel pump at silver lake sand dunes. Filled a 20 ouncer with gas and my buddy sat under the hood and squirted fuel into the carb and idled out to the parking lot. not a tough out in the middle of no where type fix but it got some looks.
    2. Blown engine vehicle one. No brakes vehicle two. Mud running in the national forest 25 years ago. Both got back to the same location together. Ill let you folks figure this one out:)

I tore the left rear spring hanger off my 3B back in my pre-welder days, up a relatively gnarly trail. I was fortunate I still had the stock drawbar on it at the time which kept the axle from going any farther back and really tearing things up.

The fix? Jacked everything back into place, slipped an approximate 18" of 1.5x1/4" bar stock (found at an old mine site) though the hanger, ran the winch cable back under the Willys and put 3 laps around both for and aft of the hanger and tightened it up. Oh, and it was snowing pretty good all this time. It stayed there perfect for the 50 miles back home.

The Power Welder would have made short and permanent work of that now. A welder on the trail is almost as important as a winch.

Circa 1988 several miles into the woods hammered a water / mud hole. Floating just under the surface was a 3-4' long stick just small enough in dia to go between the grill slats. Punched right through into the fan. Removed radiator , tore out the wiring to my friends fog lights. Using a flashlight ( probably 1 am) stuffed copper wire into the damaged tubes and pinched them with needle nose. Dragon soldered using a can of starting fluid and bic lighter. Took the fan off and using flat rock and hammer straightened it. By now the hole had settled skimmed water off the top with a brigade of miller lite pony bottles. 180 all the way home with no leaks. I save the booze for the campfire afterwards now. Youth....

    PGHCJ5 I smell something broken...

On Saturday I had the Jeep out and was about 20 or so miles from home. When I went to head back my throttle cable snapped off right at the pedal. Fortunately I wasn't on the side of the road (Jeep took mercy on me) and could come up with a creative way to get home.

I found a similar piece of wire totally intended for a different use and made it work with a little help from an electrical connector. I'm sure mine is a small win compared to what others have managed to pull off.

    Here's an image of mine:

Bent the tie rod pretty bad. Used the strap from a ratchet strap to wrap it to the drag link and tied it off. Front still toed in but was able to drive it back to the trailer and get home. Before wrapping the passenger side tire would turn normally and the driverside pretty much did whatever it wanted to do.
