My First Jeep Build 69 Cj-5

Discussion in 'Builds and Fabricators Forum' started by Timber Cruiser, Nov 30, 2018.

  1. Sounds like you probably have the same one. It had been on the Jeep since new. Mine was bolted with six bolts on top of the fender with a 1/4 aluminum plate that I added underneath to sandwich it to the top of the fender well. I don't know if that really helped. I was doing 55ish when the deer bolted out. I hit the brakes but don't think I lost much speed before it when over. You nailed it. It went over the right and slide quit a ways on the drivers side and stopped just shy of going off the road. The windshield frame took a lot of force on the way over. It ended up coming off the Jeep. Thankfully not in my direction. It happened really quick. The only part that felt slow was the sliding. It felt like it wouldn't ever stop.

  2. I decided to go ahead and model up my Jeep in Solidworks. I'm planning on building some half doors and rock sliders. It will come in really useful for doing the design work. Playing around with paint colors, I think I really like this blue.

Holy smokes man! That could’ve been really bad. Glad you’re here to tell about it.

Stupid deer. I hope you went over and kicked it in its parts.

  8. My dad is retired and has some extra time, so he offered to help me get it ready to paint. I thought I would probably have to get a new fender, but he is doing a great job of saving the old one. He's off to a great start.

  10. Ever since the roll over the Jeep has looked really tweaked. There was a 1.5" difference between one side and the other from the body to the ground. We were concerned that the frame may have been bent in the roll over, so we decided to start looking into what was wrong. Thankfully we found the the body mounts had shifted. The previous owner had replaced the body mounts and used the wrong size bolts to replace the originals. They were all bent. We now have it all repaired and put back the way its supposed to be and the frame is fine.

  11. Making good progress. I'm having a hard time deciding to keep the old color or try something new. I'm going to have to make up my mind soon.

if you pop the distributor you can see the gear. can you tell what shape its in. probably not a good angle.

super nice jeep. what do you think was jeeps reasoning for putting a plastic gear. save 10 cents. is the plastic gear an original part? that the factory put in

The plastic gears were much quieter than the steel gears.

It wasn't Jeep that used the nylon gear .It was used widely by GM on many engines including the 225 V-6 and I suspect it was for noise reduction. As far as inspecting the gear by looking thru dist. hole the fact that it's still there is reason enough to change it.

do you know if the plastic gears are still available. now that you have all steel gears is the sound really noticible. i am looking around for stuff. this is just a thought, do 225's have any history of dropping valves. i have never heard of that. but i have not been a big fan of overhead valves. i like pushrods. but do you know where i am going. drop a valve , plastic gear, strip plastic gear, done. or drop a valve, steel gear, do some chewing. just a thought

Good questions.I don't believe a nylon replacement would be found. The noise reduction factor was probably lost on the jeep as they are a bit noisey anyhow.
The Dauntless engine is reliable and I have never heard of any issues with the valvetrain. Hope you enjoy your Jeep.

Not absolutely sure but I believe the plastic cam gear actually is a steel gear with the plastic coating on the gears steel teeth.
