Have you checked to make sure there is a vent on top of the t-case and not just an open hole?

The gunk is why I suggested diesel/mmo. Alternative is atf, lots of detergents in that stuff.
The pto has some value, p.m. me. Always looking for parts.

    I will check both vents.
Can the vents be plugged to stop water enter?

Just an observation - on an open Jeep left outdoors, rainwater can run down the shifter and into the transmission. If it freezes it can even lock up the trans.

There is only one vent. That one vent is for both the T-90 and the Dana 18. Don't plug the vent, pressure will build up and force oil out somewhere. You say the oil gets so nasty is why I wonder if the vent is missing.

Great thread. Have a similar issue. My 72cj5 would not move one day after I let the clutch out too fast and stalled it. Took out the rear dr shaft after inspecting the rear diff. Rolls fine now. This is a project vehicle and hope to start it this summer. Need to do more research (PTO, spec manual etc) and see how this thing ticks. Again, great site!!!

FYI, 1972 uses different trans & tcase than the ones referenced in this thread...if you're having problems with yours you might want to start your own thread in the intermediate section.
    Oh, and welcome aboard!
