Wheel Well Color

Were the wheel wells of flatties painted the same color as the body from the factory?

Now for opinions... do you think it would look better to be the body color, or black?

 

I prefer body color. That being said, I had the underside of my 68 tub and fender wells coated with a color-matching bedliner for durability. The color doesn't match perfectly as they are different products, but it is close and I like the look of it.

 

I'm going with body color in the wheel wells on mine.

 

The original 3b I had was body color.

 

My personal opinion: I think on a light colored Jeep, a black wheel well would look better but on a darker color, body color may look nice.

 

I haven't seen anything different than body color at the reunions, counting only the survivors or restorations.
I am going to go with black bedliner on my 5 mostly because, well negative space.

Mine are black, but my wheels are too. You shouldn't listen to me. I may be a bad influence.

 

Prefer body color---My '47 CJ2A was faded red/orange back in 1973

This was where I was headed also. I painted the front wheel-wells black to cover some body work and it looks good - because that part of the body is yellow. But with the final color plan being dark blue, I think the black would clash.

Body color. It just makes the job easier too.

 

On my 64 CJ5, PO had painted them black and where the tires rubbed you can see the red under the black.
Didn't look like it too ti long to rub and make it look patchy.

Body color will go back for easy touch-ups.

Hands down, body color looks best for the fenderwells, at least to me. Actually, I love the louvers that show on the left front fender of the flatties. I may try to install a set of louvers on the right side on a 3B I'm piecing together. The lighter colors show off the fenderwells better.

Another vote for body color. Sprayed my 3B last summer, easier, and looks better IMO.

 

Mine are black. I like the shape of a CJ5's side panels, it sets it apart from all other Jeeps. Painting the wheel wells black helps this shape stand out.

But the next time I paint it will be all one color, just to avoid being "body shamed"

 

Hey Brother .... I dunno ? Dark Blue up top & Black underneath ='s a brute, just like your build is gonna be ! ( Just my 2 pennies ) .

I like body color, and I'm avoiding bedliner except front floor pans and up the side where I have an exposed repair panel seam that invites water intrusion with no escape path.

And that's the problem with bedliner. Especially on the bottom. If seams are sealed on bottom but water gets in from the top (it will) then you have a problem with no good solution. Friend of mine has a 2.5 ton army truck with bedliner-coated bed. Inside and out. Except water gets into the stake pockets. Bottom of stake pockets are mushy aneurysms full of wet rust.
