Just started this from one day to next?
Idle was so bad, I had to turn up 2 turns just to run?
    Air screw has little effect.
It actually causes a whistle at some settings?
Took top off, carb straw blew through all I could reach, no difference?
Smells rich at idle, when reving up and down?
At idle, it REVS up to bout 1k, then falls down, almost dies, then idles up to 1k again?
Hot or cold same? I gaped points, no difference?
    Can't find any vacuum leaks?
I have a gauze air filter, covered with a filter wrap, carb looked clean In side?

Fine grit in bottom of float bowl? I have had that happen. Take a brake bleeder and suck all the gas out. How about the float valve? Check it out.

What is the composition of the needle and seat? Rubber-tipped needle or all metal? What is the float setting? The low-speed jet may be too small. Check ball and weight? Or just a pointed weight?

So this on a carb/engine that was otherwise running fine until recently?

    Ideas to investigate:
    Sinking float?
Failing needle/seat assembly? Or junk in between needle and seat?
    Excessive fuel pressure?
Vacuum leak? (likely a big one)

Thanks for input, coming off, and complete disassembly in progress!
Yes it was running great 1 night.
    Then next day doing this?
I've had this happen before years ago, just can't remember the fix?
Time for an all out bath!

Hunting is often a slightly lean mix. Could be many causes. Water in carb bowl?

I'd have run a vacuum gauge test before removing it, and I'd set the ignition timing and points to spec before doing the final tuning.

Meanwhile, rebuild to exact specs FOR JEEP. As scoutpilot indicates, it matters what components (and settings) are used. Not all kits have the right parts.

Took apart, cleaned all, still trouble, set points, and timing, still no fix?

And it wasn't too much for the F-head when you originally put it on?

Did your post say you had it on the F-head for 3 years?

i read it as "it came off of an AMC-6, where it has given me trouble for the past 3 years. now it isnt working on the 134F head engine at all. i ordered a new solex just now".

The Carter came off a amc 6, ran great 3 years, started this acting up over night?
Was never perfectly, but decent for a tractor motor ,lol.
I have some past with solex, worked on air cooled vw for 15, years.
For 80$, I can't go wrong, and need my cj, to be reliable for kids, and grand kids, to
    learn on?
Hopefully, I can dial it in, and forget it?
What's y-alls take on the solex?
    Thanks

The way I'm reading this is you took a carburetor for a 6-cylinder motor and tried to make it work on a 4-cylinder motor?

Yes, and it worked decent for a while, with rejetting , and some tuning mods.
Carb doesn't care how many cylinders it's feeding! It's a fuel and air mixer controlled by vacuum signal!

vacuum leaks arent always obvious. my 77 had a yf on it. i rebuilt it once in 20 years. did you try carb spray on intake and carb gaskets ? the fluid will monentarily cure the leak . i have been fooled more than once with vacuum leaks . it can be frustrating.

And correct jetting. And bore size.

I'd obtain the correct Carter, then send it to Scout Pilot (see above) [Home | Old Jeep Carbs LLC] and be done. That's the best way to a reliable Jeep.

I may pull it apart again sometime? It ru s great, anything above idle?
Surges, hunts, loads up at idle?
Air screw was really sensitive before it started this, had to be turned just right
Bout 1.5out to idle smooth. Now it's all way in, and still surges.
In the middle of a 401 build for my j10 now, and don't want to waste time on this carb!
Hopefully I can bolt the solex on and forget it a while? And concentrate on my j10?
