Clutch Adjustment

    Need advice on adjusting clutch

On my new to me 1957 CJ the clutch is at the very top of the pedal travel. I looked at the clutch cable and it is all the way screwed in.

Would opening it up an inch to half an inch, lengthening the cable, moved the engagement down the pedal?

I get the sneaking suspicion I may need to just go ahead and replace it.

Yes, unscrewing the cable (making it longer) will put the clutch engagement further down in the pedal travel.

Pedal needs that free play at the top or it will burn the disc.

Walt how do you measure travel to insure you have enough free play at the top?

I would think in the middle of the travel. I thought I had mine right, but when I rebuilt my transmission. I discovered the throw-out bearing was slightly ridding on the pressure plate. I then adjusted it to release closer to the floor.

Push down the pedal by hand until you hit resistance. You should have about 3/4” to 1” of free travel.

Or wear out the throwout prematurely. Need a smidge of free play at rest, at minimum.

Like boopiejones would be my way. But you really should go by your FSM.

If you have no FSM then do it a boopiejones said. 3/4 to 1" is what I like.
