    This is an age-old debate....;)

    I had stick shift Jeeps for 25+ years and flew under that same "stick shifts are the only way to go" flag...;)

    I still reach for the shifter while cruising slow down a hill from muscle memory learning to keep the T-90 from slipping out of second...;)

    Then I drove an auto off-road - while rock crawling even - and found that I preferred it.

    If you haven't driven an auto off-road I'd suggest at least trying it for yourself. You still do a fair amount of gear changing - mostly to limit top-speed, etc.

    And I'll be honest - 95% of my Jeep usage these days is backroad cruising which the auto is nice for. At this point I'd rather the Jeep be setup for what I do with it most the time, rather than being inconvenienced by having a Jeep setup for what I do once in a while.

    If it were a trail-only rig it might be different. But probably not. ;)

    problem is that i dont have anything that i can abuse off-road that has an auto. the closest is our '05 suburban, and someone may get a bit angry if it went off road.:madwife:

    Well, not sure what your intended use or driving style is. I was never one of those guys who wanted to "see what the Jeep will do" and abuse the thing until something breaks. I feel like the automatic helps me be more smooth & elegant while wheeling - less clutch dropping, wheel spinning, etc.

    Spend enough time around Jeeps and Jeep guys and a chance to drive something else will come up. I also ended up renting Jeeps in places like Moab and they were automatics.

    i want to see what it will do. elegance does not come naturally when driving that way. hopefully i can meet up with other jeepers, and get a chance to try an auto.

    When I started looking there were very few automatics that I was interested in. I drove a couple of manuals and they are way easier to drive than my old CJ. I did hear from a few members that made the switch and they all seem happy with the auto.

    the newer manuals are a lot easier to drive, dont have to forcefully hold them in 2nd, and they shift a lot easier. ive driven autos, just never wheeled them.

    A hand throttle can help a lot with a manual transmission in tricky offload situations. You don't need to manipulate the gas with your feet along with brake and clutch.

    I had a hand throttle that I made with bike parts, made a huge difference. I just got tired of the 3 day recovery after a weekend trip. Only had it out once so still need to get used to it. The SM420 is definitely not easy to shift.

    I've got a similar sort of thing, made out of a bike shifter, mounted it right on the shifter. Works great.

    I'm also a fan of automatics in Jeeps, and Jeep-like vehicles. A friend 30 years ago had a CJ5 (81"wb) with a chevy 327 and a TH350/D18. That Jeep made a believer out of me.
    I've driven several more automatic early Jeeps, as well as Willys Wagons. They always impress me how well they work.
    I'll have a 4L60 in my delivery, and have a TH400/QuadraTrac in my Rover D90 clone.

    Just made my second purchase, 2-D44 diff guards. Looking at rock sliders, rear bumper and possibly a synthetic winch rope and tow bar. I had a rope on the CJ and it is much easier to deal with than steel cable.

    I know this topic can be divisive but I really love the rope on my 75. I’m also planning to go rope on the wife’s tj.

    what kind of diff guards did you go with?
