Novak Clutch

    I’ll work on getting one. But my fork is just about perpendicular to shaft and in first third of fork opening. My slave is exactly what Novak has for kits. Mount on back side of bellhouse. But I’ll try to get one in next few days, have to work 48hrs

    When the transmission was out did you spin the input and test gears ?

    I sort of went thru this installing a hydraulic set up Clutch Woes
    Did you install a new pilot bushing? The one I installed was a little tight and cause a lot of problems.

    I did spin the shaft a bit to get the it back into place. Don’t know what you mean by test gears. I can shift in any gear when engine is not running.

    The gears move freely and I did spin the shaft a little to get it back into place. But it all moves

    I was thinking - put the transmission into 1,2,3rd gear and turn the input and be sure the output turned the correct amounts. Testing all the gears and the TC high and low while it was sitting on the ground. I've done this to my transmission. Not with the TC connected but I've never had the issues your having . You maybe could use the clutch plate to give you leverage to turn the input shaft if needed...

    that should at least tell you if the tranny is working in the gear you cant engage..

    so as of right now..
    Transmission is back in the truck with the appropriate leverage to disengage the clutch
    still cant engage 1 or R (with engine running?)

    i guess the next silly question would be before you installed the Novak slave kit was everything working perfectly?

    A couple items based on my experience. My Slave was 7/8 for the novak slave and I've used up to 1" on other slave cyls. You do need to match what the slave recommends, but normally its an equal or larger bore to make sure enough fluid is moved.

    Another issue I've seen was an improper torque spec on the Pressure Plate. I actually had to back off to a stock level vs the Centerforce on a pull type slave for the '49. I had the same issue with not being able to get into 1 and R, but others worked. Dropping the torque worked and its not been an issue since.

    Yes it was all running before I stripped it all down to install all upgrades/paint/etc

    do you have the push rod extended all the way?

    Yes.. it’s all the way out. I’m installing a new master this week. My last one measured.70 so I’m getting a true 3/4 bore to match the 3/4 Novak slave. I’m hoping that doesn’t he job. The pivot ball is about a 1/4” or more longer than original (can be adjusted more but I feel like it’s a guessing game)

    So I tried starting it in 1st. It started to move forward. After turning it off I had to push the keep back about 6in to disengage my shifter. But still grinding if I start it in N and try shifting.. ideas?

    I have 4” of travel with my new MC. Both slave and MC are 3/4 bore. I bled the system, and tried starting it. While running in N it grinds when I try shifting in any gear. So I tried starting it in 1st. It pulled forward without engine fully running but trying to start. So I assume the Tranny is ok. TC is in High and disengaged. This is where I am at currently.

    That's enough throw. Clutch disc in backwards or tight pilot bushing? Possibly bad bellhousing index.

    Pilot bushing seems like a good thing to check. 3 or 4 people on the forum have had issues with them in the last year.

    I’ve had the hub in the disk be too thick three times now.

    Your slave may be over traveling and pushing the fingers all the way into the flywheel.
    Your clutch hub may be too thick and jammed on the splines of the input shaft.
    Your pivot ball may be of incorrect size for proper lever action
    Your release bearing may be of incorrect size
    Your pilot bushing may be worn out or too tight.
    Your bell housing may be offset.

    You keep trying to make it work without figuring out why its not working. To do that you're going to have to pull the transmission and measure stuff. Verify that your transmission will shift through all the gears out of the Jeep. verify nothing is put in backwards like the clutch disk. Its probably not going to fix itself.
