Wow, your Jeeps were all fantastic! I'm still on my first, 26 years later. It's definitely a work in progress.

Very nice jeeps. My 71 CJ5 has been my only jeep, bought it new in late 1970. Within the first week I had the warn overdrive in and with the 4.88 gears it made a perfect combo with the dauntless 225 for crawling and highway. In 1987 I had some extra cash so I purchased a crate 231 even fire V6 which bolted right in. I added HEI, an RV camshaft, headers, a performance intake and a small Holley 4bbl. Sure has made a nice package. Put the running dauntless 225 on an engine stand and it has sat there ever since.

That is sort of myself also. My CJ 5 was purchased 51 years back and the 3B 49 years ago. The CJ 5 is titled as a 69 (when I purchased it) and also has the optional 4.88 gears/225/OD. The 3B? It has morphed through several iterations.

As I reflect back I ask myself the same thing. Why did I ever get rid of them.

The 1974 and the 1978 were great jeeps. However my 1971 is my Crown Jewel.

The 1945 mb was great rock crawler with the SM420 and the bad was the noise it made at about 50 mph. Deafening.
The 1974 was my best hunting rig. It was comfy to drive, however I did not like the 304 V8. Sluggish
The 1978 was the best all around, crawler, comfort, get up and go. There was nothing I did not like about it.
The 1971 was the jeep I always wanted. Since I was retired I had plenty of time to do a frame off restoration. The hard part was finding a likely candidate.
Once I found it in Colorado it was off to the races. I knew I wanted a good crawl ratio. The 225 V6 in my opinion is one of the best jeep engines for the early cj5.

    Those were all nice rigs!

I would go so far as to say it's the best stock engine ever put in a Jeep. Early or not. It certainly has a way more usable torque curve than the current V6 offering.

  20. i really wanna swap a dauntless into mine, but probably easier to find a cheap 4.3
