    Hey everyone,

I’m trying to find a trail or cab cover for my 73 CJ5. I’ve only been able to find them for late year (76+) CJ5s or later models.

I reached out to Rain Gear Covers, but theirs is for 76+ and they advised me that my windshield wouldn’t fit in the 76 and my best bet would be to use a looser fitting 92-95 YJ cover. I would really prefer a proper (snug) fit.

Anyone know where I can find one for a 73 or is anyone here selling one?

    https://www.raingearcovers.com/produ...83-trail-cover

    Thanks in advance!

One of their 76+ covers came with my '71 when I bought it. It doesn't pull down all the way over te windshield, but it fits well enough to be functional:

Here it is on the '69:

Whatever you do, don't buy one of the cheap ones. You wouldn't believe how fast they fall apart. The rain gear one does look nice however...

Does it not pull down due to the windshield wiper motor or the actual dimensions of the windshield prevent it from going all the way down? Looks like the 76 will get me close. Just wondering if I might be able to have it modified to fit a little better.

You were right. Already much better feedback than I was getting there.

The main issue is that it's not wide enough at the top. It would cover the wiper motor fine if it was. I've thought about modifying mine, but it's pretty far down my priority list right since it fits "good enough". The quality of the Rain Gear covers is very nice.

That’s what I figured since I know the 76 windshields are slimmer at the top. Thanks for your help! I think I’m gonna go for the same cover and try to modify mine, rather than purchase the YJ cover, as Rain Gear suggested, since I think that will be loose everywhere.

If you modify it, post here so I can shamelessly copy your mods.

Will do! Just ordered the cover a few minutes ago so hopefully I’ll have an update in a few weeks.

Are you running down the freeway at 70 with the cover on? I typically use my windjammer and have the doors on if the weather is not good.

No, this is not for while driving. The cover actually blocks/covers the windshield. It’s for if I need to quickly cover it somewhere since I don’t use any sort of doors or full top (only bikini top).

The question was are you towing your rig with this cover on to keep it clean. It seems like it would be a parachute.
To keep the dew or rain off my seats I use a harbor freight tarp at night when out wheeling.

Small update...I haven’t yet modified the top, but I did get it in a couple weeks ago and as expected, it fits almost perfectly, but like @Fireball, it doesn’t get all the way down my windshield and also doesn’t make it all the way over my back seats. Once I get through some other priority fixes, I’m planning to make the attempt to modify it. I’m thinking about taking it to a convertible top repair shop, rather than trying myself. Here’s some pics that show the fit. The next update should be the final modification in a few weeks.

I have a 75 w/o a back seat. Looks like it might fit great. Like the G- Wagen next door.

It looks like yours even fits a little better than mine. My vintage Smittybilt roll bar interferes with the back slope in addition to the windshield not fitting..
