I know nothing about it, Nate but, recently there was discussion here that no one still makes a low gear set for the 18 so, if Summit still has some, they are likely left over stock.

Interesting that it is listed as AA kit - the original kit (that has been discussed as no longer available) was from Tera.

Summit drop ships alot of stuff from manufacturer. I wouldn't be surprised if you ordered it then it came up unavailable.

As far as I know, the TeraLow kits are dead. Herm is apparently getting them reproduced but he indicated it would be sometime this fall before they are available. I really need a 6 spline bull gear to replace my overdrive when I disintegrate it.

Not in stock in any of their warehouses. That means drop ship.

I may try it and see what happens. I would prefer Herms kit though.

I ordered a 3 gear set from Herm last week.
Just have to wait and see if he has any left ……

  9. Question: does the 3 gear kit use the original bull gear?

No....a different bull gear is needed (smaller diameter/less teeth)

You must have a 4 gear set to operate the D18 and a 5 gear set is required to operate a D20.
The 3 gear set is used for D18 applications along with a special overdrive bowl gear.
I got my three gear set today and yes I already had an extra Tera low bowl gear laying about.
So yes Herm alone is still selling the gears at least for now…..

It looks like the Summit link shows a ship date of August 16, so maybe someone (AA, Tera?) is running a small batch to meet our limited demand?

  13. I was interested in the the Dana 18 tera low gear set but opted for the sm465 trans instead had to rebuild trans due to new main shaft install. And a new bell housing and resized my drive shafts but couldn't be happier

  14. if you do both, you can get a killer crawl ratio.

  15. My combination is almost to slow some times 4.88 gears sm465 and Dana 18 thats like an 80:1 crawl ratio but i don't like heights and some trails i go on are cliff hangers and rocky helps butloads

That is a very informative site, but Bill is very misleading. For a non street legal buggy with huge tires it’s correct.
A CJ on 33’s with a crawl ratio in the 60’s to 70’s can go anywhere that the jeeps ground clearance and short wheelbase allows for.
We just took 8 jeeps across the rubicon with crawl ratios from the 40’s to 70’s without issue.
Traction and ground clearance are probably more important as crawl. Tire size plays a huge part of crawl ratio. Bigger tires require way more crawl ratio then our average 33” tires.
We are rebuilding Steve’s Jeep this winter:
    SM 420
    2.46 low D20
    3.73 gears with lockers
At 64:1 crawl he will be running circles around the rubicon.

Yep, crawl ratio in and of itself, is just another worthless number without any meaning in the real world. One has to consider the whole package and the intended use. Personally, I'll never own a Jeep that can not be driven on the highway at typical speeds and one that can handle all the off road I want to do (which is similar to the Rubicon). Having to be competent in both aspects does add a few engineering challenges.

Crawl ratio goes out the window with juice tranny. Next project is th350/d300 and 3:73

In the article "the actual number of useable gears I have at my disposable, even with dual transfer cases, is actually pathetically low. Out of a possible number of combinations totalling 16, I really only have 7 gears"

And yes this is a sm465 with a np203 doubler then a Teralow d20 so his crawl is absurd before the 3.15 gears.
