Anyone purchased the steering wheel puller from KaiserWillys that has NOT worked pulling the wheel off? I've tried the tension/hammering shaft method with nut on end to protect threads with no success. I'm trying to get the old Ross steering box out through the bottom and might be difficult with the steering wheel in place. I don't want to buy the puller if it has failed - I'll just keep hammering the shaft and tension.

I have never tried to pull an older Jeep wheel, I have pulled the Ross box out the top with the wheel on it. Could you drill and tap 1/4" holes in the wheel hub and use a standard wheel puller? I bought a new wheel for my Jeep, if you do that make sure and paint it before you put it on, the paint they used wore off in just a short time. I would use a hard paint of some sort, my new wheel is worn down to the plastic now after only 10k miles.

That KW puller looks like it would work, but for about half that price I bought a combination tool from Harbor Freight that works very well for pulling these steering wheels, and also can be used for other jobs.

The set includes two bearing separator jaws, the larger one works great for pulling these steering wheels without damaging them.

Search the HF site for this:

Yep, that looks like the puller I have from HF.

I have the heavy duty one from KW. Works great. Has the special nut that screws on to the column and keep from buggering up the threads and end if steering tube.
