Flat Bed Trailering

I have a 1957 CJ5 and need to trailer it 250 miles. It has no top. What is the best way to trailer to ensure the hood stays latched. And windshield has no issues. The hood secures fine and the windshield has been totally rebuilt. Just want to hear advice to ensure the trailering goes smooth. Thanks.

I haul them many miles a year, mainly flat fenders but. As long as the window latches in the upright properly I would haul it like that. Less chance of paint getting messed up.

If your hood latches are in good condition, you should have no problem. Personally, I like to trailer my JEEP with the windshield down and properly secured. This is in fair weather of course.

 

I haul them backed on the trailer, and the windshield down with some padding under the windshield supports. The windshield up catches a lot of wind.

I know flat towing I get about 20% better mpg with windshield down, that also matches the calculated wind resistance I did in school.

My paint isn't pretty so it gets a pool noodle and ratchet strap.

 

I’d probably go windshield down, but windshield up should be fine too as long as the latches are good. Another option would be to remove the windshield, wrap it in a blanket and put in the bed of the tow vehicle.

 

I tow mine on a tow dolly with the windshield tied down to the hood, and remove the rear driveshaft and ratchet strap to hold it up out of the way.

 

Be careful doing that! You need to have more weight on the tongue, if it's tongue light it'll tow squirrelly!
