Rochester 2g Tragedy. How To Fix. Mount To Air Cleaner

A few weeks ago I had a tragedy happen
The hood and windshield frame in my Jeep slammed down and broke the glass. I though that was the worst if it. It wasn’t

I found the carb had the mount break off that held the threaded rod for the air cleaner to tighten down to. That sucks

If I try to epoxy it. Most likely it will break when tightened down to the air cleaner.

it being a pot metal or aluminum alloy seems to be a bit more difficult to repair

if this happened to you. How would you repair this?!

Could you adapt the air cleaner hold down off a BBD?

I'ld build a box around the carb and put the outlet of a Turbo or supercharger to it. Maybe even a snorkel (then you can have the little top hat pre cleaner like a tractor)

I managed a decent fuel resistant epoxy repair for the support arms for the central female threaded air cleaner support post. I figured it wouldn't last either, but been working for 4-5 years.

Not glad that happened but glad to see crap doesn't only happen to me! Is there enough material to drill and tap in to in
order to fabricate something like jeepguy posted?

Edit... There are quite a few returns on pot metal repair on Bing. Lots of
reviews on Amazon for epoxy type repairs. It can be welded too. It is the strength
of the repair that is of concern.

The carburetor is very common. I'd source another and swap the top. If it's a large bore I have 4-5 cores here

The top of mine was damaged like someone had grabbed the threaded rod and shoved it towards the rear of the engine bay when I bought my '68. Ended up buying a replacement top, maybe even on the forum, can't remember where anymore.

LOTS of Rochester 2 barrels out there, this is 100% the best solution.
But if it's the small bore manual choke 2G used on the CJ 225, that might be tough to find...

You sure don't want a repair to fail and have pieces ingested into the motor. As mentioned...sounds like the best option is to replace the carb top.

Funny thought came to mind.. That how we always knew the late 70's and early 80's camaros had a swapped intake and holley.. They all had the tell tale 1/4" hole in the hood punched through from the inside....

This is exactly what killed the original 225 in my CJ. A PO had brazed the air cleaner bail back together, and the braze failed, and sent that chunk right through #1, killed that engine but good.

I'll look around tomorrow Dan. I have a couple parts carbs I can probably part with a top if you need one

Their homepage heading isn't so promising. :worry:

Another one here that had the carb horn break :(
After thinking about using JB Weld, and the possible consequences of it failing, I bought a parts 2G off eBay and used the top half.

That quadrajetparts.com bracket is for the large throat 2gc, but it looks like something that a guy could build with a little ingenuity.

They show a large bore one, and a small bore option.

I did saw the homepage showing they're not currently accepting orders. Hopefully that gets cleared up. Otherwise, finding a parts one is seemingly the best bet.
