I have one similar to boyinks, with identical hinges . It also has mounted gas cans tucked behind the tire s\. I took it off my 73. Would sell for half what they want

Greetings from North Carolina, this is my first post. I have been enjoying this forum and it's valuable information for over a year.

Recently I had a bumper made, installed it several weeks ago and wanted to share these photos with you.

Eddie, who goes by the name besrk, has been making bumpers for later model cj's for years. This fall, after some pleading, he agreed to revise his design to adapt to my intermediate. It is one stout bumper, and may be an option for someone with a fixed tailgate like mine.

He is an exceptional fabricator and is great to work with. Eddie still has the cross member pattern, and cad drawings if anyone is interested.

Thanks again for all your help, I hope I can return the favor.

    Mike

Thanks alot for the compliments, It has been 2 years since I started this project/addiction, and I'm still married.

Next on the list will be to remove/reduce the body lift and replace the exhaust.

How about some shots of how the bumper mounts to the frame? I am starting to fab mine next week, but am unsure of how to attach it.

Here's the one I'm fabbing up on night shift. Basically a knock off of Cross Enterprises unit like Boyink's. I post some more pics when I get it painted and mounted.

Just a suggestion if you build your own... I bought a trailer axle/hub assembly from a trailer supply house for about $30. The other end of the hub was a 6" piece of 3/4"x3/4" solid square. I cut the bumper I had built out of 6"x2" and welded the square to the walls inside (I cut it down to 5" and resealed). It has smooth running packable bearings and a little hub cap. Not sure how much weight it can hold, but it is an axle so a lot...

thanx Mike. I cut the main pieces today. I still need to fab the mounting pieces. What you have is close to what i was thinking.. A few questions.

The first pic shows 2 bolts. On my Jeep there are already 2 bolts holding the cross member onto the frame in the same place as the ones shown in your pic. Are the nuts captive?

In the same photo can you give me the inside distance from the cross member to the bumper?

And what thickness plate/flatstock did you use for the mount?

    Thanx in advance..

The space between the bumper and cross member is 2 1/2" and the plate measures 7 1/4" x 3" x 7/16".

I could not get to the nuts without removing the gas tank. I tried everything that I could think of. I even heated and custom bent a wrench. The problem was getting a wrench on the nut itself. There is very little clearance between nut and frame.

Removing the tank was quick and easy. I'm glad that I hadn't removed that body lift like I want to. It did give me extra room to work.

The tank turned out to be in very bad shape so it got replace along with the sending unit and of course might as well sand blast and undercoat everything. You know how that goes.

Anyway good luck, maybe somebody else can offer better info.
