When I started my flatfender rebuild I needed (wanted) to relocate the fuel to a location behind the rear axle. I wanted a tank that would fit the location, have about 15 gallons of capacity, a reliable sending unit and because I have a fuel injected V-6, I needed to address the fuel pump issue. Not being able to find a tank that met my needs, I decided to build the tank. After calculating approximate size I headed for the nearest PNP and found an S-10 tank that became a doner for my project. It included a fuel pump/sending unit, tank parts and even the filler neck and fuel lines.

I removed the fuel pump/sending unit and after a thorough cleaning, cut out the tank top / expnsion chamber / fuel pump flange section. With these parts and some material I had a freind shear and break for me at his shop, I built the following tank.

The bottom of the tank is about an inch higher that the lowest point of the rear shackles.

Nice job. Just out of curiosity, what thickness sheet metal did you use and to what pressure was the tank tested?

I used 12 ga. material to build the tank. That's quite a bit heavier than a factory tank but it is on a Jeep and I did not build a skid plate. The tank was not designed as a pressure vessel so great care must be used when testing the welds. I tested the tank to 2 psi.

Not really, did take any before the teardown. The jeep's in pieces right now although I am about to put the body back on the frame.

If you are in or around Cliffdale stop by. I live 3 miles to the east.

Thanks, Ed. I've been thinking about upgrading to a rear tank by using a later model CJ tank. Making my own is certainly another approach to consider. I'll have to see what gauge sheet metal my brake can bend. :)
