Origonal Hall Tail Light housing color

Discussion in 'Early Jeep Restoration and Research' started by James P. Enderwies, Nov 13, 2004.

  1. First of all, no I did not do a search! Why? Because I know that I have the orig Hall tail lights and didn't want to read thru 50 posts on them to fine out what I THINK is the answer.

So, here it is. Was the orig. painted color of the Hall "housing" Black? Like I said, I think it was. Mine are painted yellow by the PO when he painted the Jeep. Easy job to unbolt them and spray them Black again.

    Thanks.

I have a passenger side one still in the original plastic pouch and it's black

  3. Kodiak: Thanks. That's what I thought/remembered. "Watch out Hall tailights--Black spray can on the way!".

The tuxedo parts were chrome. I don't know if all Tux's were that way though.

I saw a set of NOS chrome hall taillights go on ebay for $200+ a couple years ago. Someone needs to reproduce copies, like the amber front turn signals and clear backup lights that are available.

BTW, I also have the Halls, mine were black, and when I beadblasted them, all there was underneath was more black!

On a serious note, how shiny was the black? Mine were pretty flat, but what do you expect for 35+ years old? I repainted them with PPG "concept" single stage acrylic urethane, gloss black.

If you really want to nail the black on the Hall tail lights you can use an epoxy black appliance spray paint.

I got a few cans at either Home Depot or Lowes and it sure does look good. It takes forever to dry, so plan on 24 hours.

Also, it does not like a second coat once it is mostly dry. It tends to flake off in large flakes and is very difficult to clean up.

So, spray it heavy and once - man does it ever end up nice.!

Now, is it 'original'? Probably not, but I bet that the jeep would rust long before the tail light would go.

Tuxedo Park and DJ3A's used chromed Hall tail lights.

I sure'd like to see a pic of what a Hall Tail light looks like. No clue!! :(

Here are some shots. The closup is trying to show the HALL word on the beadblasted taillight.

They are supposed to have studs out the back to attach to the body with, mine were rusted, so I removed them.

One assembled, one apart. The driver side has a slot on the bottom and a clear plastic insert for a license plate lamp.
I've wondered in tuxedos had 2 pass side lights since the plate was mounted on a hinged mount on the tailgate.

Yes, the Tuxedo Park used two right tail lights - neither had the license plate opening on the bottom.

I have two NOS lens kits for the Hall in regards to the license light. One was plastic but the other was glass. Same part number.
