For those with headers

How did you route your exhaust. I am looking to put some headers on and dont know what kind of mufflers to run. Looking for a somewhat quiet sound. Forgot to mention that I am running a 225 with and hei. I have an offy intake and looking for a 390 carb to bolt on. That probably all that I can do right about to get the 225 up to snuff. Unless installing a cam isnt too bad(never have done one). Im pretty mechanically inclined.

Assume you plan on having the mufflers infront of the rear tires....don't think I've ever seen a jeep with headers w/the rest of the exhaust out the back....

 

I have the dual exhaust setup also...that way i don't have to breathe in the axhaust and makes for a quiter ride also

 

Either way. I am installing this on a jeepster. Right now it runs out the back but with the headers I am getting, Ill more than likely go out in front of the rear tires. I dont think Ill have to worry about fumes since I have a little more room than the cjs.

 

turn the mufflers down slightly to keep out the fumes. only get a whiff when stopped and wind comes from side.

 

R yours routed outside of the frame rails like Mike's?

 

Hi, I got a 225 cid with Blackjack headers and they run outside the frame and use a Billet muffler with an albow for a pipe that exits just before the rear tire. It is little loud for cellphone use, but I don't use a cell when I'm driving. Then nobody else can when they are beside me.

 

Hey guys, I was looking at this as well, this past year. I had the Headers with the outside rail exit, that went to side pipes exiting before the rear tires. I wanted to use side rails, or a step bumper on the side with the 6" lift I have. I had a local shop bend 2 1/2" pipe from the headers, directly in toward the middle of the frame. It then loops in a "U" shape under the frame. Then from there dual flowmaster 12" exhaust with dual tail pipes out the back that are located inside the frame rails. At the back the have a slight turn down, to keep the exhaust away from the body. This sounds confusing I am sure, but I will add a pic tomorrow, in the light. They sound great, and I am stopped at times to be asked if I am running a 304 or some version of a V8, most are very surprised to hear that it is the 225 - V6.
There may be one down side to this design idea of mine. The looping pipe that goes under the frame, may hang if you do heavy rock climbing. I believe it hangs no lower than the emergency brake, or transfer case, so to me it has not been a big issue. The "to-come" pics will hopefully explain this, and give you some idea to what I am saying. Good luck.

Pic #1 shows the bend, pic two- shows the trail back, pic 3 - shows the view from behind, pic 4 - shows the tails pipes (I think you can only see the left side, sorry), and pic 5 - shows the beast, and the side view, no pipes visible. NoWeedz, have you ever had problems with exhaust coming up into the vehicle and fumes, particularily when stopped at a street light for example?

 

I would have to say "NO" from the exhaust. I do have a few areas that the fumes get in from other places. The space around the brake pedal, and clutch. Also my Transfer case shifters, the boot is modified to fit, and doesn't, so I have a shop rag that lies on the boot to block the fumes out, and it does pretty well. If those places did not allow fumes in, I don't think there would be any. The driving wind gets the fumes in, the redlights and stopped times are fume free. I am planning on fixing these type things this winter.
Does anyone have a solution to the overdrive shifter boot problem? (2 for the transfer, and 1 for the OD) I now have a large universal boot with a slice in the side for the OD. Hence the fumes getting in. Any ideas? Thanks.

Considering the shiny OD, I am surprised your spotted the line in the foreground Mike.

 

What muffler should be ran for the 225. Flowmasters? If so what series?
Im putting an order for headers soon and hoping the addition of them plus a holley 390 and offy intake will help out my 225.

 

i use the hedman ones from www.4wd.com for the v-6. no complants.
