Anyone on here ever adapt the 76+ Tuffy security glove box to the 75 or older dash? If so what was involved?

There was a thread on this awhile back where someone said it fit fine. It's smaller on the inside than it looks, but apparently will fit fine. I hope that true because that's what is going in mine...right now it's a big empty hole.

The dash glove box holes are identical so it should fit the opening, it's the heater box that *might* get in the way. There appears to be only 5" of depth if you draw a line straight back from the lower right corner of the dash to the heater box.

Ok. I searched and didnt find any threads. Must have done it wrong.
I will order one as it will do exactly what I want. I am going to hide a battery cutoff switch in side of it and store the reg, insurance card, wheel lock key, and a throwaway gun.

    Perfect. Thanks.

Let us know how it fits. I just realized that the other thread was in the "Early" section, I think the under dash heater box is a bit different, that might change the game.

I am not going to be running a heater so it should be ok for me.

I have one for a '76 and newer CJ and it doesn't fit the opening of the '70-'71 dash I have in the '6 currently. I think the glove box dimensions changed a little bit in '76. The Tuffy box opening where it mounts to the dash is larger iirc.

I fibbed. The Tuffy box I have is actually narrower than the hole for the early glove box opening. Height is the same. Depth from the mounting holes to bAck of the box is 4 13/16". Mounting holes are different. Looks like with redrilling some holes and some spacers on the sides it can work ok.

Very cool. Sounds like that will work. I intend to add a locking strap to my battery tray and to run the positive cable through the firewall into a grommeted hole on the tuffy box, through a cutoff switch, out another grommeted hole and back through the firewall. Do you thing the tuffy box is big enough for that?

Also, I have both a 74 and 75 dash to choose from. Is there any difference between the 2 years?

For less money one can put a .50 cal ammo can in place. It's the exact size of the glove box opening and you can use the same screw holes to mount it as you would the cheapo plastic ones and it's way roomiewr. Very little fab, no cutting on my 59 Cj5.
