Tonite I finished installing a Delco CS130 alternator in the heep.. My original Motorola crapped the bed in Moab a few weeks ago.. I did some extensive web research and settled on a DELCO CS130.. Now my voltmeter holds a solid 14.4 volts.

FWIW I had to modify the old mount a bit. I shortened the rod to the block 1-inch in a lathe and rethreaded. The adjuster slot had to be filed just a bit, I used a rat-tail file. I bought a plug at NAPA, and fusible wire.. I found a wiring diagram for a 75 304 online.. Used the old regulator feed for the field excitation, and ran a new battery charge wire in heavier gauge wire. I used the old batt charge wire for the sensor.. After much reading and just doing it it turned out to be rather easy.. Next project is a new alternator mount that raises the alternator to a high mount position such as GM installs..

Next test is the drown test.. I plan on going out to the boat ramp and seein how it responds to deep water..

If anyone is interested here are a few of the sites I used for tech info. There's more but these are the main ones I used..

I don't mean to Hi-jack anybody's thread but I have the same problem with our build and need some help too!

Here's our problem. I have a Cj6 w/ a 258-I6, I recently installed a HEI Distributor and a Delco Alternator. I just finished putting in a "Painless wireharness" I am not getting any power to my gages except a slight twitch in the Volt meter. I am sure it has something to due to Alternator not being wired properly. I talked with Painless and I don't think they relize my problem enough. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,
    Ken

To test your charging system you need a DC voltmeter. Read the battery volts with the key off. Should see ~12 VDC prolly a little less. Start the vehicle and take a reading. ~ 14 VDC is normal.

As this thread was started by zila and swapped to Ken Miracle, I have been hesitant to chime in. A lot of readers will not see the answers to Ken's problem because zila's thread is fixed. This is something that confuses the issues. Should Ken start a new thread or should it continue on this way?

Walt, I believe I should have started a complete new thread for my issues. I am away from our Jeep for another two weeks, So any advice given would have to wait until I get home. I'll re-post once I get back to TN. Thanks for trying to set things straight.

Don't worry about it.. It's all related..

  12. Thanx for the offer Zilla. I have the FSM but I'm sure I'll need all the help that I can get when I swap-out my I6 for the 304 I'm wrapping up now.

After my son grew up, 5 knee surgeries and a career change that would frown on me being on crutches 6 weeks out of the year, the 3hunney collects alot of dust these days. Last month, a local race promoter/friend invited me to marshall a hare scramble. It was the most fun I've had in a long time!
