This is the beginning of a new project for me, a '61 CJ-5 thats been sitting for about 12 years. While going through the mechanicals I decided to get the original Presto-Lite generator and starter rebuilt at a local specialist. It only took him less than a week, as he had parts in stock! He did a test on each to make sure they were worth rebuilding, then a complete teardown and cleaning. Cleaned up the armatures, commutators, and used modern silicone bronze bushings to replace the old ones, and sealed bearings where open cage bearings had been. He said this should make the oilers redundant, maybe only oil the bushings once a year. He also did a pretty good job repainting them, I'll post pics later. All for only $90! Not a bad deal, I think. The shop is Auto-Electric in Johnson City, TN.

It is great to find someone who is still hands on to repair electrical. He sounds very reasonable at that. Guys like that are getting fewer all the time.

Good deal! I think I paid about that to have just my generator rebuilt.
