there is a plate on my f134 under the exuast ports of the side of the engine and while i had the engine on a pallet angled a little it started to leak oil out, i was wondering if this can be replaced or if i have to make a gasket out of permatex or somthing of the sort.

Yes, you could make a new one or buy one. The cover is removed when adjusting the valves.

I'd replace it . . . looks like it's got some sort of "goo" on it now to seal it up in addition to the failing gasket . . .

do you think napa would carry this?

Probably not. Walck's 4 Wheel Drive in PA is where I get 99% of my parts. Carl's a great guy, knows more about the early Jeeps than anyone I've ever met.

New ones are made of cork, like the originals I expect.

You will also need gaskets for the exhaust manifold and the manifold-to-header exhaust flange, as the header needs to come off to access the side cover...might as well set the valves while you are at it.... Seems to me they sell a tune-up kit or something that also included the overhead valve cover...

Correction to above, if that is a F Head 4 cyl the header does NOT have to come off for that job. I just did it myself about a month ago. Get the part at Walck's. I got it as part of a top end rebuild kit after I blew my head gasket. Did h/g valve adjusts, side panel, rings and more, and never took the header off my engine.

Thanks, i was thinking to my self why would it have to come off. not to big of a deal, its leaking on the engine soon to be transplanted in to replace my my current one and i figured i'd replace the gasket before i threw it in there.

I'm sure you could change the gasket without taking the header off, but if you want to set the valves while you have it apart it makes life much easier. And it really is not that much more work. Put a little penetrating oil on the studs the night before....

    Your choice of course.

Agreed it is easier to d with the manifold off, and my kit came with the manifold and exhaust gaskets but the rust is so so bad that i was afraid to break a stud off in my block and I was not in the market for doing that job! So we did work around the exhaust system when we adjusted valves, it was indeed a bit more of a PITA but in comparison...So next time, i already have my exhaust gaskets!
I also would throw big X2 or X3 or wherever we are at this point on the "adjust your valves!" when you replace that gasket, might as well!

You might be surprised how well your exhaust manifold bolts come out. Last winter when I rebuilt my F head I soaked them in some liquid wrench for the night and they came out, didn't break any of them, and I prepared myself to break all of them. lol

i would be very scared to even think about those studs breaking off, i just had to get the remainders of a bolt out of my dads bell housing where the starter goes because the hardened bolt snapped off(95 suburban with a diesel 6.5 turbo), not fun, i cant even imagine the studs.... lots of drilling and re-tapping or heli-coil's

For what its worth, someone on this forum somewhere recommended "Aero Kroil" as a good penetrating oil/rust buster.....I have been using it and it really is the best I've tried.....

Also if you get a little detail type wire brush and give the exposed threads a good scrub it really helps...

FWIW I love PB Blaster and it did zero on the nut/stud combo on the manifold to block on my Jeep, I think maybe it's never been off....ever! It's like the mani the nuts and the studs have all become one entity...
