Well, as all things happen my gas tank started leaking just as i was getting everything else up to snuff. My question is what is the difference between a 4 cyl and a v-6 gas tank. My cj was built around the 13th day of september '66 . I have found many things on my jeep are left overs from the '66 model year. My gas tank has a six screw sending unit and what i believe to be a return line connection on top (it's been capped off) and the fuel outlet is on the bottom. In researching new gas tanks i keep seeing ads that say (not for v-6) what is the difference? Any thoughts or insights appreciated.

    Thanks, ohale

The 4 cyl tank has the six screw sender and bottom outlet.
V6 tanks have a sender held in by a locking ring with feed and return hoses on the sender.

I think only later V6 under seat tanks had the lock ring sender with fuel lines out the top. I used to have a 69 that did (purchased in 1973 so I know it was original). I now have a 68 V6 with six screw sender, fuel outlet on bottom, and return line fitting on top just as described in original post. It is low mileage and unmodified so I think it came that way. I have seen other 67s and 68s with same tank also. My guess is the change to lock ring sender was late 68 or early 69

A while back the gas tank on my 66 went out and started looking for a gas tank. I got lucky and a forum member happened to be parting out his project and I got the tank from him, perhaps post a WTB ad.

otherwise I put some effort in looking for a replacement. I haven't come across a 6 screw sending unit tank with a return line in metal.. I was going to use a 4 cyl tank and have a shop braze(weld a return line) I don't recall in the input fuel line is same size though for the 4 cylinder or if it has a drain bolt like mine did.

you could go with a plastic tank which would be no rust. This is the way I would have went if I didn't find another tank.
http://www.mtscompany.com/jeep.htm it is set up for the v6 with the 6 screw sending unit and the return line. Another forum member recommended this site some time ago.
