Hack N Tap

    Hey fellas, just wondering if any of you have done the Hack N Tap on your XJ? There is plenty of discussion on it out there, but I always revert to my ECJ5 base for better input. I am considering it on my 98 XJ, I am very capable of precision work so I am not afraid of that, but just looking for any cons on this mod. I have 4.5" of lift and developed some driveline vibes from it.. Looks like a great solution on the cheap..

    I've never done a hack&tap

    I plan on making a drilling jig on my lathe to get the drilling and tapping spot on.. I don't really see any issue with it and I'm not gonna wheel that one real hard.. It's mostly on road with some light wheeling.. I'm sort of into this mod..

    It'll be June before I get to it.. I'm in upstate NY now on a job, then straight to Romania again then I get home in June.. Then the Wifes sister and husband are coming from the NL, pretty much the same day I get back and then maybe.. Just maybe, she will allow me some shop time.. I will get to it and I will make some pics/vids of it and post..

    I was looking at them, but you can find the SYE kits with the housing and correct stuff for about $150 on some forums, but new from a vendor you can find them for about 175. I think think it is a bit more stout.

    I was looking at more reputable companies and they go for 300 - 350 without the driveshaft.. The Hack and tap I can do for about $25 for a used driveshaft and I have the rest already, plus I just like the idea of DIY if it's not something completely shady.. I was talking to a guy I ran into at Wal mart today that did it and has had no issue so I'm all in.. Just gotta get time!

    Go with an SYE they are cheap and are more stout. $175 is about right . Crown automotive sells them . They have a 32 spline shaft. And come with a tail shaft and new bearing and seal . Not much to go wrong there. For the drive shaft get an Xj front drive shaft and get it shortened.

    I've had two hack n taps and one sye. I haven't had a problem with either and I've beat on both set ups pretty good.
    Since you have an XJ you can get the yolk kit from Iron rock Offroad and cut the output shaft to the right length to use a XJ front driveshaft. That saves on the costs some, plus you would only need one spare shaft you could use front or back.
