T98A front adapter plate?

Apparently the T98 that came with my 6 is the original transmision, explaines the 2" or so further back mounting point for the clutch tube and the funky crossmember. Unfortunately it's missing the front adaptor to bolt it up to the T90 bellhousing. Anyone know the thickness of the factory one? My budget probably won't stretch to buying one, but we have a big ol pile of DNI plate at work and I can probably get a pretty good deal at the water jet place :) . I has a pretty close look at the write up on the 3b page, but I'm unsure if it's 7/8" or 1". Any help would be appreciated, thanks

Indeed he is and he doesn't charge for it. We are very fortunate to have him as a member of this forum. Many cheers for oldtime.

Just curious - I have an adapter plate that has casting #938289 on it - it is 7/8" thick - was told is was for a T98 to F134 bell housing.. Also have another that has casting #992667 was told that it was for a T18..I-6 application...both have same bolt pattern for the transmission mounting.. Any advice?

The 938289 number would have come into use around early 1965.
I'll see if I can find a specific reference to its application
    .
The 992667 number would have come into use around late 1971.
Again no books with me so I'll se if I can find the specific application.

    Old time - thanks as I plan to use the 938289 in a 1968 CJ6 with the T98 transmission out of a 1970 CJ5....

The original T98 front adapter plate # 910467 dates back to early 1956.
As I stated the T98 front adapter plate # 938284 begins around early 1965.

Know that Willys Motors Inc. was a logical organization.
They did not change part numbers without reason.
This implies that something about the T98 adapter plate must have changed in 1965.
I have come to the conclusion that the change is directly related to the 1965 switch to single lever transfer cases.
It is my expectation that the original front adapter plate must have been modified to accept a single stick shift lever bracket for the transfer case.
The change to the original adapter plate will logically warrant a new part number.

Technically the #938289 is correct for your jeeps vintage and will be required for single stick transfer case useage.
If you have a T98 rear adapter plate you will have to use a small hole (3-3/32" index bore) transfer case.
If you have a T18 rear adapter plate you will have to use a big hole (4" index bore) transfer case.

Once removed the re-alignment is best accomplished by installing the screws with throttle valve in the tightly closed position.

managed to pull the T-90 from the frame today, and look at this:

t90 indexes exactly on the t98 bearing retainer... I did not expect this, but it makes it really easy to just fab up a plate adapter. i'm going to grab a 10"x8" x 7/8" piece of plate from work and get a 5" hole cut in it, drop it on the t98 and thru punch the mounting holes. once thats done, i'll drop the t90 bell housing on the plate and then through punch those. ( have to use socket head screws and counter sink them. Should work out ok :)
