Times two. And as he hinted, carb tuning may not even be the ussue, unless you have everything else in spec first (points, timing, valves, etc.).

Thanks Scoutpilot, that is a very generous offer. I have to think I am getting close though... maybe not.
As noted in an earlier pic, I have the metal float, so I was able to solder it to repair the leak. I have looked and looked, and I swear, there are no numbers on this carb denoting its model. Here are pics of the ribbed area:

that is some good info. I wish mine had the adjustment screws on the mixture needle.... I have to bend a tab. Just for reference (giggles), look how dirty the bowl was when I started this venture:

No numbers is not a good sign. How long have you had this carb? A few years back a very large lot of offshore manufactured YF’s was dumped on the American market. They had no model markings on them. For the most part, they did not work. Very poor castings. Some are still out on the market to this day. Reputable sellers are telling folks up front they don’t work and are for parts only. Tell me, are there markings on the face of the throttle? Should read 1-630”. Oh and BTW, Carter did not use Phillips head screws.

Notice it doesn't say made in USA underneath Carter YF. I think this might me one of the Carter YF clones. I think he needs to find a original YF and go from there.

Some "NOS" YF carbs have defective casting of the accelerator pump cover. Essentially, the metal disintegrates.

    Something to check.

sorry, no numbers on the throttle linkage either. The top screws are not Phillips head, so maybe the lower screws were replaced at some point..... none of them match. I have no idea how old this carb is, it came with the jeep, and I have only had the jeep a year. It must have worked at some point in its life because it shows a lot of wear and it was very dirty. So if I can't get it adjusted properly, what is a good replacement carb? I see the weber was mentioned, but how good is the solex replacement carb? I don't really want to change out the air horn and the oil bath air filter just yet.

"but how good is the solex replacement carb?"

Search the forums. Personally, I'd find a good YF.

OK, I finally got this darn thing working. here is what I did. I purchased a Solex carburetor to verify that my problems were in fact, the carburetor. I did NOT like the Solex. Yes, it did start right up and idle perfectly, but it had a terrible dead spot when accelerating until the engine warmed up.... like 10 minutes. unacceptable. AND, even though the jeep would still do 50 mph, it took longer for it to get there. Then I took one more stab at the Carter. I soaked it in carb cleaner for a few days and put a new float in it. The biggest thing I did was put the original main jet back in it instead of the one that came in the kit. the hole in the original main jet was huge! The main jet in the kit was half the size and it was completely closed off by the metering rod. I don't know if the huge jet is correct, but it works great now, so I am happy :)
