For lack of anything else to do on a Jeep, I would like to rebuild the emergency brake.
I don't know if it's off or if it's on. When back, its off, when forward its engaged?

Its just free floating now 20160824_154050.jpg

When I pull the lever under the dash, that lever on the brake housing moves forward. Doesn't actually "brake" anything, but it does move.

Mine will keep the jeep stationary on a slight incline, but its not to be trusted. I adjusted mine too tight and when I would roll to a stop it would make my gears clatter from the pulsation in the out of round drum. clack clack clack.

They work very well when set up tight and clean.

Often the issue is a leaky oil seal from the transfer outout shaft. Fixing that may well include a bearing adjustment.

Just installed one back on my jeep for the first time since 78. It works like a charm.

Like anything else, they have to be maintained, but they do work.

Pull toward the front should be activated. There's a cable, and it pulls toward the driver. As I understand it, it's leakage from the transfer case that makes these brakes ineffective. Lots of discussion in old posts about stopping leaks from the Dana 18.

I'm not seeing any seal linkage.
Just fix whatever it needs, shoes, springs, the mechanicals, and move along.

I think Herm sells the whole unit replaced for about $100, can't beat that with a stick?

I have picked them up on eBay where they surface from time to time. I would think a WTB in our classifieds would be a good start. The brake pull handle from an early Commando can be modified to fit the CJ5 by shortening the bracket.
The biggest issue with used ones is the plastic handle is often broken, and the ratchet mechanism is rusty with broken pawl springs.
The original armored cable works much better than the replacement plastic-covered aftermarket pieces.

There is a handbrake ratchet assembly with cable on eBay right now. Item number 1820 7600 8628. I think it is $36, but does have a corner broken off the plastic handle- a common problem. No affiliation.

If you need a picture of the whole e-brake in working order I can provide one. I just finished installing mine. I found a NOS handle and bracket.

I'd like to see the photos! The problem I've encountered, is removing the old cable from the crossmember clamp, what's the procedure?
