I need to get to speedo to see if drop or two of oil will free up the gears inside of it. Is it easier to pull the speedo completely or unbolt the dash and lay it over? While in there I need to see why temp and gas gauges not working. From those that have done it, which do you recommend?

Depends how much spaghetti you have behind the dash. Can be easier to unbolt dash, but i had one that i had to grind off welds to unbolt it

If it's your first time I'd pull the whole thing as to get an idea of where all the wires go. Take a lot of pics and notes before you mess with them.

Note...The dash doesn't really come off. The wire lengths barely give you room to work.

If you unbolt the dash to lube the back of the speedo, be sure to NOT turn on the key or you will burn up your fuel gauge due no ground.

The backside of the early speedo has a lube hole just on top of the casting where the cable enters.

With a little contortion I was able to get some oil in mine with no removals. Tried that?

Not tried anything yet. Looking for input before I even start. Not wanting to reinvent the wheel every time.

Mickey I just looked at my extra speedo there is a small hole at the top, it's about 11:00 o'clock looking at it from behind. I stuck a pick in it and it is very small. You might be able to spray some WD40 down in it with the straw. You might want to vacuum it first to keep from washing dust into it. Just a suggestion. It is really hard to work under the dash for me I am only 5" 6.5 " and 71 years old, so it would be easier to just take the bolts out of the top of the dash, loosen the bottom and lean it forward to access the speedo.

The worm gears inside the speedometer use a grease material and is not accessible from outside the housing. The oil hole being discussed is only for the input shaft at the rear where the cable is attached. Can you spin the piece where the cable goes in? If not then the speedometer assy will have to be removed from the dash.

Correct, of course. IIRC the gears drive the odometer only, not the speed needle. If your speedo reads speed but not miles travelled, I suspect you will find a stripped gear.

I've got the opposite issue.....odometer works but speedometer needle does not move. Is that potentially just a lube issue I can use the 11 o'clock hole and wd40 mentioned above to try and fix?

I wouldn't use WD40. It really is not a lubricant. Use 3 in 1 oil or some white lithium grease.

How do I know WD40 is not a lubricant? I used it a lot on file cabinets and desk drawer glides for a large bank. A year later I kept very busy replacing file cabinet and desk drawer glide. The WD40 dried out all the oil on the ball bearings and the glides failed. It was kind of like work security...:susp:

WD-40 is actually a cleaner not a lubricant. People try to use it as a lube, but it is not. As mentioned above, it will dry fairly quickly.

I agree WD 40 is a cleaner, and it will sometimes loosen up old stuck oil or grease and the part will work again and it will dry out. That works for me then you need to oil it after it is working again. Be careful with a speedometer, you don't want to get oil on the face or inside the glass.
