Rear Brake Drum Remove

I just dragged home a 58 cj5 and still going over it. I see a few screws on the rear brake drum.
Can I just remove the screws to remove the drum to check the brakes or do I need to use a puller like on my 62 willys wagon ?

Every once in a while they will just come off, but 99% of the time you need the special puller.

 

and might have to back off shoe adjusters

If you need a hub puller, Amazon has a good one for good price, around $38.00 I think. I bought one and it works good.

 

Thanks I have one have as i been working on old vehicles for years.
Not sure if you have the same puller as me but I have found that the shaft where handle you hammer on will take a large air power socket. Most of the axel nuts will come off with the air gun which is a lot easier then beating the puller handle with a small sledge.

 

I agree, with you. I had a stud that was spinning, had to cut the head off a long mag lug, pull wheel off, pull the hub, weld the stud, I got the rest of the nut off then. I always figured I may as well buy one, like you said there are other cars that need one too.
