Ventilating windshield seals

I have one question that I don't know where to direct it towards. I have aquired a ventilating windshield which is complete without the rubber seals. It will fit perfectly on my cj-5. I knew it was a military export option and received some great information so far from the M38 site. They have some great info:

Just for your info, the M38 was a low hood flat fender L-134 powered jeep produced from Jun 1950 thru Sep 1952. The M38A1 was a CJ5 look alike curved fender F-134 powered jeep built from Jul 1952 thru 1968. They were not supplied with ventillating windshields. These type windshields were optional on the M606, M606A1 and M606A3 as well as the CJ3B, CJ5 & CJ6 from 1954 thru 1972. They are not uncommon.

I have some pics but they are too large for the site.

I appreciate any direction you can provide

Is the question where do I get a rubber seal from? If so I am also interested in getting hold of one for mine? The botton section of mine is well rusted and I am contemplating cuttinga section out. To do this i need to remove the rubber. Not sure how you do this?

I just sent them emails and will let you know what I find. I also sent emails with pics to several other suppliers on an M38 site. If they have them, I will let you know! Any other suggestions are appreciated.

The rubber that goes between the inner & outer frame is virtually unobtainable :(. Rumors abound about sources for it, generally along the lines of "I knew a guy who overheard a guy who had a second cousin twice removed who was told by an itinerant South American he picked up hitch hiking in Europe that the stuff is seasonally available from the back door of a part time operation run by a guy who has connections to to some other guy who knows someone working at an obscure rubber fishing lure smanufacturer-"

The actual glass seal should be stock at any decent windshield shop.

I'm in the same situation you are, I picked up a NOS frame without the rubber. Its come to the point that I'm considering getting some made up. There was a thread on this , search on "ventilating windshield". The web site posted there for Restoration Specialties, which had something that looked sorta like what is needed, isn't working now :(.

I'm planning on checking with some local weatherstrippping producers to see if they can duplicate the seal for a reasonable price, but it hasn't had a high enough priority on the "to do list" yet.

FYI these frames were options on both M38A1s & CJs. They usually showed up on "export" orders headed for dry, dusty parts of the world. The intent of venting appears not to be to keep you cool, it's to break the suction caused by the windshield so the aforementioned dust won't be sucked in & deposited all over the place.

Here's a cross section scan of the seal I removed from Magnificent just so you can get a feel for what it should look like. The triangular part sticking up fits into the inner frame channel. The part sticking down to the right is what seals against the outer frame. As this is a pretty old dried out sample I'm pretty sure on a new piece this part would have a bit less curve to it, i.e more to the right. The grid squares are 1/4".

If you do happen to stumle across that guy who knows a guy who heard etc. let us know, lottsa people are looking for this stuff-

    Howard.

Hmmm. That looks astonishingly like the weatherstrip seal between the innner/outer windshield frame on my '2A. It came on a roll, and I had to cut the pieces to fit the three sides of the inner windshield frame.

    Check them out at www.surplusjeep.com

Failing that, I'm sure that Beachwood canvas will have something.

    Do tell?

I had heard somewheres that the Cj2 strip was different from the 3B/5 stripping. I'll check on that- Thanks.

i knew about the stuff avaiable for the 2a, but i was thinking that because that windshield has square corners and the 5 has round corners that it wouldnt work. :?

    OK guys, try this one.

There was a ventilating windshield for sale on ebay a week or two ago.

I contacted the seller and asked if he had the seals that go between the inner and outer frames and he said yes, he did.

Perhaps the fellow didn't know what he was talking about, and maybe he did, but it was Northstar Willys.

If Northstar truly has them, post a follow up on this thread please.

Oh, by the way Howard, You mentioned the guy who overheard a guy who had a second cousin twice removed who was told by an itinerant South American he picked up hitch hiking in Europe that the stuff is seasonally available from the back door of a part time operation run by a guy who has connections to to some other guy who knows someone working at an obscure rubber fishing lure smanufacturer-"

    His name is Yahtzee.

Naturally he has six of them, but is not selling. He also has a warehouse full of WWII jeeps in crates that he is going to sell at some undertermined time. He also has three maps to the Lost Dutchman mine and is living with Judge Crater on an island not far from, oh that other place the name of which escapes my mind at present.

    Good luck!

I found one. Surplusjeep.com had one left and I snatched it today. Thanks for the suggestion. I have put about 20 other messages into various restoration sites and will update you if I find more. Thanks for the help.

    Howard,
I spoke to restoration specialties and they have "key" rubber which fits into the channel. Jeff said to measure the depth and width of the groove on the wind shield. He said it should work fine. I received word from 2 other sites and they have nothing. I will let you know on the others.

Cool, I'm glad you found what you were looking for. I completely forgot that the ventilated '5 windshield would be rounded, as opposed to the square frame on my '2A. My bad. Sounds liek a guy could make a nice buck if he could A: Reproduce the ventilated w/s for the '5 and B: come up with a supply of seals for them.

We'd get the ECJ5 discount though, right? ;)

Yeah, there were some items in RS's catalog that looked close, items 2897A & 2897B grabbed my attention but they curve the wrong way.

    Bummer.

The problem is that the inner frame sits out 'forward" a bit of the outer , plus it's actually quite a bit smaller than the O.F. opening leaving a really big, well comparatively big anyhow, gap to be filled. If the weatherstrip doesn't curve back enough, out far enough & in the right direction it's not gonna work right. There's a lot of people I've corresponded with who have tried "other" stuff & are not happy with the results :(.

Another plan (B, actually) is to make something up from neopreneinserted into the inner frame channel & faced on the back with that magnetic rubber sign material to actually "grab" the outer frame.

I have to much time on my hands when I start coming up with ideas like that :(.

I did try Beachwood, No Joy there.

Northstar sent me a picture of thier seal but it doesn't look to me like it would work very well as it doesn't curve back to meet the outer frame, see below. They say they should be getting something else in the near future that may work better, I've asked them to let me know when it shows up.

I got a call from www.surplusjeep.com which siad they can get reproductions for around $45.00. I bought the NOS from them for $90.00. Their number is 1-800-353-3772.

I'm the guy who bought the ventilating windshield off ebay last week. Northstar Willys sent me a sample of what they have and it is close, but no cigar. I called Beachwood Canvas and they say they have this seal and that it is New and not dried out OEM. It is in their catalog. As per my windshield...it's only money! It is a one piece version instead of a split windshield version. I thought that this might be strange until I saw a picture of it in the Jeep (Kaiser) Accessories brochure. Check out the windshield in the picture that shows the longitudinal rear seats. It is a one piece.
