Tim, I've been thinking about doing this in my shop- do you have insulation behind the bubble stuff?

    Howard,

My rental has a detached 24' X 32' garage that I insulated, then installed a vapor barrier.

I think Tim's might be similar?

Yes. The roof rafters are 2x6s, and there are unfaced fiberglass batts between the rafters and next to the roof sheathing. The bubble material is two layers of bubble wrap with an aluminized layer on both sides. Comes 4' wide, in rolls, meant to span rafters on 16" centers.

Most of the actual insulation comes from the fiberglass batts. The side and end walls are insulated with paper faced R13 batts.

The main issue with a roof like this is condensation on the sheathing. There is no air flow next to the sheathing, like with a conventional cold roof. A vapor barrier is required to prevent condensation. The edges of the bubble wrap are glued to the plate and ridge with silicon sealer, and taped together with aluminum tape. All of the staple penetrations are covered with aluminum tape. It is essential that the insulation be separated from the living space by an impermeable barrier. You could use plain poly sheet (ie visqueen) but the bubble insulation provides a reflective barrier of questionable benefit, and adds a little more R to the roof. And the bubble wrap is easier to handle than the poly, IMO. And the silver surface makes the interior brighter.

According to the manufacturer, the reflective barrier is only functional when there is an air gap between the radiating surface and the reflective surface. So the silver on the interior side is reflecting heat back in to the interior. The side facing the sheathing is in contact with the fiberglass, so it does not function as a reflective surface. If you wanted to reflect heat back toward the roof, you could install the fiberglass with facing, and then leave an air gap between the upward facing reflective surface and the roof. I expect this might make sense in a hot climate, where the main concern is keeping the space cool. In my case, warming the space is the larger energy cost.

PS I probably did not have to be so thorough in sealing the vapor barrier, since this is not really an "occupied" space (little respiration/perspiration, no cooking and bathing), and since it has electric heat. But an element of thoroughness is in my nature.

Yes, the bubble wrap is mostly a fancy vapor barrier.

Thanks Tim, I've used the bubble wrap before for insulating attic heating ducts & as vapour barrier in a sun room. As I said I've been considering using it for the shop roof just as you described.

I used the double bubble stuff with the nominal R6 ratting & yes they do want the air gap but don't discount the reflective properties- that stuff really does reflect most of the heat back. Not the same thing but I did a basement with the foil faced styrofoam- in the corners you could stand 3' away from it & feel the heat from your body coming back at you. :)

Y’all don’t want to see my shop and garage. Submarine machine shops have more room.

I've used the bubble stuff too, but these days I often use a layer of the rigid foil-faced Isocyanurate (it is actually not styrofoam). Taped joints and/or expanding foam seal at the edges.

Provides both insulation and vapor barrier. And with multiple layers slightly gapped, it gives the "thermos bottle" effect using the reflectivity. Maximum "R-per-inch."

Well ...........for general overall organization skills , Focker gets an A grade in my book, very nice!...........and if you ever have the desire to spend a week in California........well I'll put ya to work in mine doing the same.

I actually have a couple of shops , but after many years of not being home at night working on the race car and having tools scattered between locations , I added this 15x40 shop which is attached to the side of my existing house......It's a one man shop although two can work in there easily , and short of having all the equipment in there two cars will fit back to back , although right now my CJ6 project is still on the frame jig taking up center stage in the middle of the shop. But what I do love about this location is the fact that I can leave a tool or part on the bench and it's still there next time I come back and yet I can still be with the family any time by just walking back inside.

One of two hoists in the shop...........this is a 1-ton

How many alternator brackets do you need, Daryl?

The alternator brackets are easy to sell. Now if I could find someone to buy one of the 23 225 flywheels that have accumulated.

    Here's todays addition
    [IMG] [IMG]
Height worked good going flush to bottom of window. That left me enough room for my shorter tool box and cart. Dropped the lower tray on the cart so the welder will fit. I still have a piece of plywood about 16" wide that ill make into a shelf above the bench. My taller toolbox and top box will go on the left of the bench. Just enough for it to fit between the bench and window to the left, out of the pic

I like the cantilevered design. Very functional! Likely the best reason for a permanently installed bench, as opposed to stand-alone.

Ok. Here it is. Shameful to even call it a workshop. 1 car garage crammed with most of my tools and 1 of my JEEPs. Can't wait for more of shop again. I got spoiled in an oversized 2 car garage at the last house. Anyhow, here it is. I learned a few things about maximizing space in this garage. Next garage will have only bottom roller tool chests placed under the work bench, like the one on the left under the drill press.

I have 2 storage units full of parts, JEEPs and tools to fit in the next garage. G Krebbs....I have my work cut out for me.

Outside...engine hoist, crappy drill press #2 with grinder mounted to it's table, and a parts washer tank to the right

Parts washer under the black tarp

    Walking in...
