It is my understanding that the Differential vent is the bolt on the brake line block. On my “new” CJ5 it looks like the breather bolt has been replaced with a regular bolt. I have inspected the rear end and there is no other vent hole. Does anyone know a source for the proper bolt?

Incorrect, it's a small hole on the back of the driver side tube.

I welded mine up & plumbed a remote vent hose into the top on the pumpkin.

I will get out the wirebrush and dig around some more. Just a thought I wonder if it is under the U bolt. I will be changing springs soon.

One thing is sure, if the pumpkin vent cannot breathe, it will blow the pinion seal
    Ask me how i know!!

I think it’s up by your brake line, midway between the pumpkin and spring.

Here is the left rear tube. I will get things cleaned up more, I’m determined to find the vent.

Took a picture of the passenger side rear top axle and found it. That needs serious improvement.

Have you taken a look inside the diff yet. If that's the vent hole your showing that is wide open and I can see rust from the picture, you might want to get it there and check things out or at least change the gear oil.

I’ve not opened it yet. But will this coming week, so far no strange noises. But that is crazy, almost makes me think it was an add on. Regardless I plan to drain and replace all fluids and update that vent. Dana 44 must be pretty stout.

On the Drivers side there is a bolt in roughly the same point.

The later CJs have a fitting pressed in to that hole, with a rubber hose and cap that goes up to floor level. The higher you can place the outlet, the better. This might be a suitable cap - Dorman Products - 924-284

Yay! put in a new vent and tubed it up above the tires. The new breather is a hard rubber. Since it sits against the brake line I did not want anything metal . Changed the fluid and all looked good.

Going to do this soon, wondering if I could ask you for a pic showing where you punched the hole in the top of your pumpkin? Is this about right? I don't have the brake lines in yet so rying to think about that in advance too.

that is for a tapered axle housing. The flanged axle housings are markedly different.

The vent on my 74 with the factory flanged axle is the same as Zilla said on his 75. Located on the top of the right axle tube about midway between the u-bolts and the pumpkin. The factory vent is just a poor press fit. When mine got knocked out I replaced it by tapping the hole with a 1/8 pipe tap and using a brass pipe threaded hose nipple. If I remember correctly the factory press fitting hole was about the correct size already to tap.

So I know I’m in the “wrong” forum for my year. I’ve got a 1966 CJ5 and I’m trying to add a vent to my axle as I braised the tube-top OEM hole vent closed.

I am looking for the ideal location to install a vent on the pumpkin.
