After driving 50 miles on the road last week I noticed I had transmission oil dripping out of the bell housing? I rebuilt my transmission about 8K miles ago. I think the felt seal is leaking? or I may have put too much oil in it? I filled my trans to the bottom of the plug hole, and then filled the transfer case the same way to the bottom of the plug hole. What is the right way to check the oil level in both? Pull both plugs and let them drip? Thanks in advance Rick.

Filling until it just seeps out of the fill plugs should have them at the proper levels. One possibility is water intrusion, as that will go to the bottom and raise the oil levels.

Is it a T90? Haven't rebuilt one of those, but the T14 has an actual oil seal. I usually coat my yoke felts with some marine grease for good measure.

Does it leak while sitting, or only after running?

Sure it's the transmission, and not the engine rear main seal?

As I recall, the T-90 can be upgraded with a sealed front main bearing. This eliminates the need for the felt seal.

Get some oil on your fingers and smell it. Gear oil has a distinct smell from engine oil. Pull the dipstick and compare, if it's not obvious.

It is for sure trans dope, I drove my Jeep to Toledo and back around 100 miles at max speed, for me that is 55, I have 3:73 V 6 axels. The next morning there was about a teaspoon of oil on the floor under the bellhousing. I will look into a sealed main bearing, Thanks guys.

Novak has the bearing IIRC. You cold also call Herm and ask, though I'm not sure how responsive he is now.
