I need to find a new repair shop! I am no longer the guy, that is going to replace the brakes on the Jeep I bought last year. I've had it in the driveway and now that I am ready to go my local, trusted, independent repair shop, they closed on me. After 50+ years in business they had the nerve to retire.
I am not sure how long the Jeep sat unused but it appears pretty well maintained, My Jeep (71 CJ5-V6) starts, using a lot of choke, and runs although it doesn't idle. I have already cleaned one of the fuel tanks and changed all of the soft fuel lines I have replaced all of the vacuum lines also. While the brakes are working they are also leaking brake fluid all over the front wheels. It drives, all the gears work including OD. Anyway, I looking for someone who will replace the brakes and change all of the fluids, inspecting as they go. I also want the carb cleaned and the engine tuned.
What do I need to know about the mysterious knuckle pudding I've read about?
    Thanks Nick

You might try your local Jeep/4x4 forums or local Jeep clubs for recommendations.

Knuckle pudding is a mix of grease and oil that some use to fill the front axle knuckles. Lots of posts about this if you search - site:earlycj5.com knuckle pudding - Bing

The fan is a 28v air compressor. WWII aircraft surplus as best as I can tell. Wire disconnected by PO. The compressor has a hose and quick connect. I can post a picture tonight. The Jeep has a 24v home built winch with two batteries and a system of solenoids and a relay. All the 24 v stuff is untested so far.

So that looks to be more than a standard CJ5, it looks like a Renegade. Those have quite a following.

Likely made using a military bomb winch motor (24V). I have a home-made one like that but no longer use it. That thing would break a 3/8" cable.

After reading the threads about knuckle pudding and reading the lubrication chart in my FSM I have a question. If I took this Jeep to Jeep dealer 40 years ago and told them to change the gear oil in and service the front axle what would they have done?

It is a Renegade 1 that I purchased from the estate of the original owner.

Drain and refill the front differential.
They would have pumped the knuckles full of chasis lube/grease and called it good.
