Tire Size With 68 Jeep No Lift

    so I recently bought a 68 jeepster commando that came with 33x12.5. They fit as far as the fender but they rub against the leaf springs. I'm thinking about getting smaller tires maybe 31 but does anyone know what size width I should run to avoid rubbing on the leaf springs? I'm thinking 10.5 should work but wanted to know if anyone else has tried. Thanks!

    Had that problem on a TJ. It was the back spacing of the wheels rather than the width of the tires. With the wheels on it when we bought it even 31-10.5-15's rubbed.
    New wheels with the correct back spacing solved the problem.
    The new wheels pushed the tires out further so they did not rub the leaf springs.

    Usually when you have rubbing on the springs, it's from too wide a tire on whatever rims you have. For these Jeeps, a 3.5" or 3.75" backspacing is typical. If you put a wide tire on a narrow wheel, the sidewall bulge will stick out so far that it rubs the springs. BFG specifies a minimum wheel width of 8.5" for their 33x12.5-15 KO2s, with a 10" wheel optimal. What width are your wheels? What is the backspacing? Tire Rack shows you the specs. Section width is the overall width of the mounted tire.

    They sell spacers to allow wider tyres, but these spacers are not homologated by insurances. They also sell adapted rims. For the same size of tyres there are various models of rims.
    I had the problem with my AUdi and winter tyres. I bought rims but not enough "déport" for the brake system.
    This was Ok at the mounting because my brakes were not new, 50% worn.
    But I put new brakes the brake system was wider and the rim was touching it!
    So I learned that for a same size of tyre, rims could be different, and the rim shop gave me discount and took back the 1st set of rims to give me 4 new rims with more "déport".

    I put spacers on i think theyre like 3/8" on front and rear to keep from rubbing it just pushes them out to the end of the wheel studs. 3/8" doesnt sound like much but made a significant difference. I suppose it wouldnt hurt anything to put longer wheel studs in and go wider. But sounds like you need to adjust the steering stops aswell. 10.5 will be better for sure
