Gonna do my first oil change on her, I live up in central Canada, and will be only driving In the warmer monthes, what weight of oil do I use and should I use some sea foam. The oil was black when I drained it and let it drain overnight. I have the right oil filter just not sure of the weight of oil to use and if I should use sea foam or not
    Cheers

For my moderate use and condition of my engine I use 10w30. I'd also use 15w40 and also straight 30w. The multi-weights give some latitude regarding temperature swings. A good filter and frequency of oil change based on driving conditions is important to me.

The only info. you provided is the oil you drained was black. I not knowing anything about your engine, would simply start with an oil and filter change--no seafoam.

If I had question about the engine, I'd drain the new oil after running some miles and see what you have. Perhaps you could put the same oil right back in; or new oil and another filter is rather a small expense.

You need to decide what brings you peace of mind, and of course, there are sophisticated tests, but if I get something new to me, I try to get it to an acceptable "starting point for me" where I have some confidence, and go on from there.

I wouldn't put additives in the oil of an engine of unknown condition unless I had good reason--without knowing the engine I'd have more reason not to. Just my opinion--but works for me!

    Well said
Just gonna use 10w30, no additives, run it and do another oil change, like you said oil changes are cheap then go from there. I don't know much about the engine, it seems like it runs ok, but that's all I kinda know about it,
    Thanks for the awesome response
    Cheers

I remember when I got my Jeep, maintenance was not done on it. The oil was black also. I did oil changes every couple 100 miles. Fresh oil and filter each time. After 7 oil changes, it cleaned out.

Rotella will give you the best protection and zinc aside from buying specialty oils..

everybody thinks too much about oil..
if your running an old engine that you have no clue on history its all a crap shoot.. run what you got or what you can afford..
the oil you choose inst going to undo anything that has already been done to a old motor.
if you have spent the money on rebuilding or a new motor, listen the guy who built it for you since its his reputation in there..

I bought the cheapest oil I could buy for my junk engine. Better oil won’t make it run better or last longer. On my 2017 Silverado, I run full synthetic though and that’s required anyway.
