For that matter, Jeep put the T5 behind the 258 in the’80s. Haven’t read up on it for a while but wasn’t there some kind of known third gear issue with these?

Slightly off topic but what’s everyones thoughts on swapping a T5 behind a 258 for us intermediate guys?

I like them, but it depends on your driving style. If you flog on it, it's not going to last, but general use they're fine. They had a 4.10:1 first gear. That's pretty darn good for a car transmission with overdrive that will fit in a jeep. They had a torque rating of ~240 ft/lbs.

They like to have their fluid changed often. The jeep versions (non-World-Class) were built to use Dexron II which is no longer available, so now they recommend straight 50wt oil. Dexron III/IV is too thin.

Interesting. Between your measurements and my tape measure, a T5 would fit in a CJ5 with enough room for a decent enough driveshaft. Very interesting.

I see a rabbit hole in my future today.

Note well Ryan's comments as they are very real. I have a T5 and in my application and it is performing well but I don't do rocks nor do I have excessively large tires. If you like the idea of the 5 speed, another consideration might be the AX15. It is about 2-3 inches longer, a little stronger and will fit. Food for thought.

I did a ton of research on the T5s when I was looking at transmission options for mine. It's what I'll fall back on if my experimental setup fails in dramatic fashion.

While not new to the group, I am new to posting as I picked up a CJ2A on a CJ5 frame that has a 225/T90/18 setup. It will be my daughter’s trail rig and has 5.38 gears in Dana 44s. With the steep gearing it needs an OD to be street friendly. I swapped an auto into my Scrambler and have it’s T5/Dana 300 sitting on the garage floor. I had the T5 professionally rebuilt to World Class and the 300 has upgraded outputs and 4:1 low range. I think it would be the perfect setup for her flat fender but am struggling to find information on this swap. I have many Jeeps but this is my first flat fender and 225. Any advice/help/information/links on the T5 swap would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, found that earlier. What I haven’t found is a build/swap thread where someone has done it. There are always little details and unexpected surprises when modifying vehicles and putting parts on that never came that way. I have built/modified Commandos, CJs, Willys trucks, FSJs and M715s; learned from many how to and what not to; passed my experiences on to a few. I was hoping to find some build threads to guide me on one of the sites.

I’ve personally never heard of anyone putting a T5 behind a dauntless. Do it, post it, and be our guiding light!

First thing to note is your offset Dana 44 will not be compatible with the Dana 300 which is a centered output. In my 1945 GPW, I am running less the 225 and 5.38 gears what you are proposing to do.

seems like the easiest solution is a warn/Saturn overdrive unit on the D18.

The rear FSJ axle under it is offset, however, I have the centered Wagoneer rear that used to be under my Commando so I can swap it in if I need a centered rear.

The T90 seems to shift ok but not having luck shifting the 18 either in and out of 4WD or between high and low (in 2WD high right now). This is an early “Brown” Spicer 18 and I think the last generation with the 1 1/4” shaft are much better. There is one of those behind the TH350 but don’t know if they are a direct swap.
