If it's just the relief spring being weak then shimming it to increase tension/resistance could or should help. It would at least be a test or starting point for troubleshooting oil pressure issues.

Exactly the kind of post I don't like to see. Like Obituaries. Revival is on the way. Good luck.

Or the spring could be broken or relief stuck?

    Broken ring/scored cylinder wall???

Also, have you hooked up a vacuum gauge to see what you could learn from it?

I have not hooked up the VAC gauge. Maybe tomorrow night I’ll get a chance to do that when I disconnect the PCV from the manifold. I’m hoping the valve is plugged but not likely.
We did put rings and bearings in 20 yrs ago but it sits all winter without being started.
I was hoping that they got gummed up by the thick oil and Engine Restore I’ve been using but Seafoam didn’t solve it.

I remember putting the downdraft tube on it years ago and thinking it ran better. I
My brother is the best mechanic around and he’s willing to help me rebuild it.
If this is the obit should I have a birth announcement when it’s done?

Your compression is not too bad or off. Try running it some more . Like Glenn said... The residual sea foam will smoke for quite a while.

I hope to drive it some tomorrow. I just pulled the hard line from PCV at manifold and it’s wet with oil.

I pulled the PCV valve and it was very wet and oily and the cone didn’t rattle at all.

Didn’t get a chance to let it warm with PCV open. Strong vacuum at manifold port. I hope to get my gauge on it tonight.

Is the smoke possibly from the oil getting pulled through PCV into manifold under carb because PCV was stuck open...OR

Is it that the PCV valve was clogged and and causing pressure to build thus giving me smoke?

Yeah ... when was the last time you changed that out ? The Positive Crankcase Ventilation valve is supossed to do just that. Replace it & run it out of sea foam at the same time & see if there is an Improvement ?

Thanks guys. I did more looking at things and I may have opened can of worms.
—I cleaned the PCV valve and reinstalled it.
—I’m considering installing the Sealed Power valve stem seals over the thin o-rings I put on. My smoke may have more than one origin.
—VAC gauge readings are as follows:
    *650 RPM
    *Needle bouncing between 19-20 inches
*A/F gauge reading rich. Leaner and it idles rougher and vac drops a couple inches and bounces more
*random sputter out of tailpipe like a miss. Gets worse the leaner I go. With each sputter vac drops 1 inch instantly and comes back instantly
    *2000 RPM
    *steady at 19 in

*I looked at the timing and I was at about 8-10 degrees BTDC. It seems that’s as far retarded as I can get ( no joke needed there please) because the slot won’t allow more movement of dist.

*I tried advancing timing and I lose vac and the idle gets rougher. Runs better the closer back I go to that 8 degree mark.

*the rotor is showing spark at the leading corner of the brass tip.

*the contacts inside the cap are showing the spark at the very leading corner of the contacts.

*I put a Pertronix ignition in my dist several yrs ago.

Smokes like a train when on the gas. Smells rich from fuel as much as from oil but the smoke is bluish for sure.

I’ve gone through the carb a million times over the yrs . I did the drill mod to prevent flt spots. It performs off-road really well as far as on hills goes. After I went through the last time 2 yrs ago I now need starting fluid to start it if it sat for more than a day. Electric fuel pump priming the carb first still won’t get it going without the spray.

I may put my downdraftntube on and see what happens. It seems to smoke here in the driveway whether I have the PCV hooked up or not.

Checked exhaust valve clearance tonight and #1 was at .014 so I put it to .016 which is where the others were.

Finally got it out tonight and I really drove the snot out of it. I cleared my neighborhood of mosquitos and maybe several other neighborhoods also.
Got on it hard under load several times and smoke got lighter.
Topped off the tank with 5 gal of non-oxy hoping to dilute the Seafoam in the tank.
I’ll be darned if she didn’t seem to run smoother than ever and had lots of power. The exhaust sputter stays away as long as I tune it out with idle mixture screw.
It got dark out but it sure seemed to be done smoking.
I didn’t Smell like exhaust either.
    Thanks for the help.

It sounds like that Seafoam may have started to free up some stuck rings. Drive it for a while, making sure to keep checking the oil level. Driving the Jeep is good for an old vehicle!
