    Hello Gentleman,
Can I get some advice on converting Rosie's front 11" drum brakes to a Disc Brake System ? She's a 1975 CJ5 with a D30 front axle & Selectro hubs. Who has the best engineered system , on the market today ?
I'm thinking that the Discs will be an improvement for the Daily driving & go along nicely with the Auto Tranny I'm running. :bananatool:
Thanks. & I appreciate all of you guys for any advice.

Quadratec has the SSBC Drum to Disc conversion for $730

For my conversion I bought later model CJ knuckles ( and all that is needed to mount those) and I will be getting Wilwood brakes.

I have heard good things about Metcalf’s. I plan on going with him when I switch to disks.
    Plus quite a bit cheaper

Well......... That was a fairly quick decision ! I 've pulled the trigger with a Horsepower Sales Conversion kit for ~ $ 650.00 . They offer a smaller caliper designed for zero grinding of the knuckles or the caliper . I've upgraded to the Timken bearings for another $ 40.00.
If I prep correctly, I can do the entire job in one day. I'm fortunate that my Rosie is virtually rust free & clean right now.... So now's the time !
Thanks everyone.... for your help in my decision.

The amount of grinding you need to do to make the chevy/jeep kit you bought is negligible.

    Chevy 1/2 ton calipers 40.00
    Organic brake pads 7.00
    1977 Jeep cj5 disk hub is 89.00
    1977 Jeep CJ5 thick disk 20.00
    Timken Set 45 bearing 8.66
    Timken set 47 bearing 8.13
    Timken hub seal 6.77
Brake lines can be as cheap as 6 bucks each or 20 bucks for braided.
Chevy 1/2 ton caliper mount 63 bucks each
a box of 10 studs is 13 bucks

So this whole kit is about 520 bucks plus shipping for all new parts. When I did my conversion, rock auto was selling calipers for about 12 bucks each with no core charge.

One thing you need to be aware of is that it looks as if they are selling the disk brake inner bearings. The drum spindles and the disk spindles are not the same. You can use disk hubs and drum spindles, but you need to make sure the bearings and seals are for the drum spindles.

I bet if you shopped around you could buy the parts even cheaper, but that takes a bit of time. The prices I got were mostly from rock auto. I did my whole conversion for really cheap when I bought sale parts... Like under 200 bucks for everything.

    Looks like a nice kit.

What type of master cylinder and proportioning valve will you be using?

I'm fortunate to have the GM Hydroboost Power steering system in there now. The ' Proportioning valve is new, but I bought it for Drum / Drum . I may have to replace it with Disc /Drum..... Oh well.
Thanks for the heads up on that spindle/ bearing difference. This is what they say in their ad : " Your stock front drum brake spindles work with this DISC BRAKE KIT." I'll double check with them to make sure on Monday morning.

The bolts they include... I thought those are for a d25 /27 and look short. You should have studs on a d30 and they might need to be swapped for longer studs.

I got the same kit on my '74! I haven't hit the road with it yet but it should do! One thing to note is that you wont be able to get the c clip back on the stub shaft. The instructions they include say it's okay, but I was thinking that the factory put those in the design for a reason. I used narrower inner bearing races (post #36 of Focker's link in this thread) and had a friend machine a little bit (.020" or maybe 0.030"?) off the face of my hubs where the locking hub bolts to. Doing those 2 things allowed me to put the clip back on with about as much play as factory. It's your call but I wanted to mention the option.

Disc brake 30's from 79-86 are not hard to find. I went through rockauto and couldn't get over $250 to renew everything if you had the caliper brackets.
