Starts And Dies

I hope that link works, it should be a video of it starting up. All I did here was put a little gas in the carb and then run the fuel pump directly into a cup of gas. No choke or anything. I revved it up a few times, which is what you can hear, and then it just dies on it’s own.

 

Also, just for more info, when it used to run it always needed fuel in the carb to start for the first time that day.

 

After seeing your video, I agree it is apparently a fuel issue.

Since this problem appeared right after you "cleaned" the carb, I'd say something happened then. Something misplaced or mis-adjusted?

Sounds as if it is not getting any go-juice from the carb. Is your choke working, and fully closed when starting?

There is also a port or vacuum line on the head directly below the carb, into the intake manifold. Also, YF carbs can sometimes develop an air leak even with a new gasket, if the mounting nuts are over-torqued and the base flange gets warped.

I assume your 'new' gasket had the appropriate X-channels cut in it for the internal vacuum passage.

 

Yes, the new gasket has that x in it. Should I go ahead and order a new gasket? Maybe that’ll do it, or at least we can rule it out.

 

The suction. The pump is sucking from a cup of gas, just so I know it’s not the filter restricting anything.

 

Anything I should check first? The bowl is full whenever I take the top of the carburetor off, so I just have no idea what could be causing it.

 

o.k. fuel in bowl. Elect ruled out. Runs while 'pumping'. That says there is sufficient fuel in bowl to reach accel pump.
I'd concentrate on the idle circuit. While unfamiliar with the carb you are working with I'd make sure gaskets are oriented properly and the circuits are all clear. Blow air through passages and also pass a small wire into openings. Wire should be similar diameter to a wire brush. That is where I source my carb passage cleaners.
Also, when setting up the needle valves turn them in until gently seated and back out 1 to 1-1/4 turns out.
p.s. with top off carb fuel is not full to the top is it? It should be down a quarter to half inch depending on carb. Also, is the float brass or plastic, does it contain fuel?

 

When I had it off, I checked the gaskets and stuck some wire in the passages. And I believe that I set that up right, but I'll double check, thanks for the reminder!

 

When my grandpa had it he gave it to someone who rebuilt it, that was about a year ago. And yes if it was sitting for a while you had to put some gas directly in the carb and then it would start up and run normally. I don't know exactly why this happened, I didn't mind it too much but it is puzzling

 

What is the throttle plate shaft? I can't find it in the manual.

 

Did the idle screw(s) get turned when you cleaned the carb. I'm not familiar with the 1bl Jeep barbs, but typically you run them all the way in and them back 2 to 2.5 turns to get something that runs.

 

The service manual says 3/4 to 1 3/4 for this one, it's somewhere in that range right now.

 

No, I don't think that that is loose. I can check next time i'm there but it doesn't run even with throttle, so if that's the case maybe it's not that.
