    My Jeep when dad had it always had a short heavy tow bar that the ball socket came about 3-4 inches above the hoods it did real well on things like small trees and sagebrush.

    This photo is from 75-76 when I was driving my jeep in high school

    Sadly my little brother (same one that ruined the engine by pulling the head so it sat that way for 28 years) Loaned the tow bar to some guy he worked with and it was never seen again.

    I don't remember the CJ ever having a "Official Jeep" dealer-installed bull bar / grille guard. The model 80 had a push bumper, but nothing else shows in the parts book (section 40). There was a bug screen that was popular.
