4 Speed Ford

    Hey everyone, not sure this is the right thread, apologizes if it is. I recently picked up a parts Jeep to build my 69. Has all the goodies like a warn o/d, dauntless, flanged d44 rear end, etc. The kicker is the trans is a 4 speed top loader ford and I can not find anything on anyone joining one of these with a dauntless.     I don't have any specific experience with that swap but normally you'd use a Dauntless pressure plate and a Ford disc.

    Does it need a new clutch? Or just curious?

    It might come down to taking it apart, taking measurements and spline counts, and sitting down at the Rockauto website to play clutch roulette. It takes time, but that site is usually great about giving parts dimensions.

    The Ford toploader came in two versions.The regular 1 1/16"-10 spline input and the heavy duty 1 3/8"-10 spline used mostly behind big block engines.There were a couple different length input shafts depending on FE engine and Windsor family. Don't recall the pilot shaft dia..Parts are available. BTW don't be surprised to see a good supply of these gearbox's as a lot of owners are installing the TREMEC 5 sp. (me included .'66 ford pu.) mike

    Take out what is there and go match it up.

    They position of the shifter loooks like it could be difficult/interfere with driver seat or leg? guess you could bend the cane quite a bit...

    Thanks for the reply’s guys! I plan on pulling it apart and seeing if I can find any part number but was just curious if anyone has done this swap themselves. Not sure if it needs a clutch but since it’s apart I figured I might as well put a fresh one in it. And finally as for the shifter, the cane is bent pretty far over even with me being 6’4” it wasn’t to bad on leg room. You can convert it to a top shifter using parts from another trans that I can’t remember the name of right now

    There are probably a lot of people that would love to hear about this shift tower conversion.That is a new one on me.

    Yes, the T-176 top cover from a CJ-7 should fit. My Cj-2 has a Ford top loader 3-speed, that had an L-shaped handle on an external shifter. I have a T-150 cover from a Cj5/7 to put on it for a similar conversion.

    A Ford top loader doesn't have a granny gear, but it's a compact and strong 4-speed. Should work well in a Jeep.

    Supposedly the T-176 top cover is the hot setup for a Top Loader in a rat rod. I wonder if you can buy all the parts aftermarket? It would be unfortunate if hot rodders had to scavenge from Jeeps.

    I actually like the T-176 4 speed from the intermediates. Probably not as stout as the top loader, but a lot easier to swap than converting one to top shift. Remember, you have to dissassemble all but the cluster gear, remove the shift forks and plug the holes.

    Pardon my nit-picking. Late, not Intermediate. The T-17x was used by Jeep 1980 or later. Appeared in Wagoneers and Cherokees and J10s too.

    The car type 4 speeds are a lot of fun to drive in a little CJ, as long as you don't need a granny gear. I think a toploader, converted to top shift would be pretty nice in a Jeep, and pretty much indestructible behind 225 cubic inches.

    find a later top loader from the later F-150, van, car and they were actually a 3 speed with 4th being an OD. Perfect for a Jeep. Hang an OD on the back of the transfer and have a double OD for the highway

    I'm no Ford expert by any means, but is this the same unit Herm calls the "RTS"? I was looking at these as an intriguing option behind the Kubota.
