Well I'll be watching. You will get a lot of ideas from the forum. I would be interested in doing this on my jeep, depending on how it works out for you! And after I win the lottery.

Stock dash . Just fabricated that trim support. The real OEM steel support is under that.

I didn't get a very good picture, but the yellow represents material to remove(not all of it by any means), just enough for say, 1/2" more? a radius of sorts. IT would probably be just fine, but it will be much easier now vs down the road with settling. Might get closer and rub.

I'm kind of drawn to a standard simple straight column, at least this one I think I could shorten it if need be. I really don't have an idea of how long it needs to be. I threw out the old column piece of crap, wasn't a standard jeep column. I need to look at my brothers jeep to see how high the steering wheel would be. I guess maybe I need to take some time in seeing how I'm going to put seating in, so I can have a seat to sit in to see where the steering wheel should be:crazy:. It's why I put the tub back on to think out the steering shaft leading to the gear :blah:~ I think I'll make dinner

I spent most the day trying to fix a leak on one of my maxjax columns, I failed and got another column from the other part of my garage. I really need to spend a day working on the columns~ here I go again :blah:

Just die grind a 4" long crescent shape , out of the flange. Leave about 1/8" at the up wall seam . When done & cleaned up you could run a bead of High temp black silicone along the cut. Just a body work modification on an inner , outta site engine compartment panel . Do it once & you'll have plenty of room & no vibration or rubbing issues.

I think Lockman was pointing out being careful - and I'll reiterate it. Some mounts are made with a fold there and no support under it so the strength is tied more than a little with the fold in the lip of the mount where you have things marked. If you remove too much, I've seen the arm on the mount fold over time if it does not have the strap support on the bottom side (you can't see it in that picture).

As to mini starters - I've never used one on any of my builds, I've always used the stock one. So I'm not a good reference there.

It's a 1978 Pontiac Firebird Column. My dash is a stock M38A1 dash. I took the original column mount on the dash, cut it in half and widened it. That way I could use the factory GM column bracket. This column basically is at the same angle as the original column. I just had to re-clock the GM column floor mount to cover some of the opening in the floor. Kind of attaching to the top left edge of the body opening. I did have to move the bottom of the column over to the left to clear the exhaust. (You may have issues with this.)

I like that Fireball!:D I do also like that it has the built in turn signal switch(y)~ I despise those squirrely strap on turn signal switches:n:. I would have probably ordered a column similar but was put off by not knowing how long the column needs to be:shrug:, and most cannot be shortned:mad:. I guess I could order it and take a chance, I do need it like right now.
    Thank you everyone:beer::flag:

Should be safe figuring 28"-30" depending on how much dish is in steering wheel and added height from steering wheel adaptor. Also how critical is the lower stick out below floor.I have done a few of these over the years and my last one on my '69 with dauntless motor I used a Flaming river 30" column and the flattest steering wheel I could find.Hindsight I wish I would have gone 28". mike

Not much accomplished today other than cleaning~ scrubbed my concrete floor with my little orbital Oreck scrubber, you can eat off my floor!

it was such a nice day, Got the 67 Mustang out and took it for a spin~ omg this thing is fast(for me). The 5.0 with the 5 speed T-5 and 3:58 posi-trac will break your neck! Well, not break your neck, but it also sounds ferocious when the 4 barrels kick in!! Oh, I hear a Beach Boys song in my head!:bananatool:

Got time to get the seats installed, that is until I get new upholstery, and finish welding up stuff on the brackets. I think they came out better than my brothers~ I think I got em a tad lower, but I don't have his jeep here to compare, no worries.

I needed these in so I can mock in the steering column when it gets here;)

Need to find some kitchen chair ends for the raw metal. I had to cut off quite a bit to match the drivers side.

I'll be contacting Mr. Mike MrMikes Fiero and Miata Upholstery Kits for Many Cars. for custom upholstery when I'm ready and have picked out a color for the jeep;)

These were out of an early Miata 90-97, very popular seats. I had bought three set of Miata seats and re-upholstered two sets, sold one set and put the other set in Robs jeep. My seats were special for this year of the Miata~ so I'll have to have the upholstery made;)

I had a 1991 British racing green miata, one of only 4000 made. 2 weeks after I sold it it was totalled in a rear-end accident. I sure miss that car.

I was thinking about using those same seats and wiring the speakers for a cb or gmrs radio.

Wow, that would be a neat looking Miata in BRG! :DI have the speakers in the headrests in my Triumph TR6 with the miata seats, but they're really not that impressive, but is a novelty;)

Thank you James, yes, Orange is a good jeep color~ I'm having a difficult time choosing colors and I keep going back to the orange. I think jeep color should be unique and lively~ I do like the flat orange that we chose. My brother couldn't choose a color, so he passed that decision on to me. For me, I'm thinking a flat color, but still unsure~ I was thinking along a green tone, but have yet to look in my color guide. I need to think of this pretty soon:confused:
My brothers jeep was a chore but rewarding in seeing something come to "life". It was a job from 8:00am to 5:00 every day except for weekends(and he wasn't there half the time). I find his jeep was much easier than mine for some reason, but still a lot of decision making and computer time to boot. Thank you for visiting my build and this one too;)
