Will I have to pull the axle to get a spline count, or can I be confident it is a 19? Or the easiest way to get the spline count. Want to install a herm FF kit.
    Thanks in advance!

Changed from 10 to 19 splines sometime in '56 IIRC, you should be able to pull the diff cover & count them.

    Yes indeed .
1956 was the year for change 10 to 19 spline.

If you have a 10 spline D44 you can change the complete differential unit to something else.
If you stay with the standard open differential you may only need to install 19 spline side gears.

FWIW per the parts manual the on the 6's the change occurred @ s/n 11871.

    Thanks Howard!
    I am 10061.
So if I verify I am ten spline. Who can make me ten spline axles to fit Herm's kit? (Yes I am lazy, or tired)

If you feel you need the extra strength of a full floater then a 10 spline axle shaft is not recommended, even 19 is considered to be on the weak side. Now of course if you're still running the f4 you're probably safe, not to say ipeople haven't managed to snap 10 spline shafts, but you're probably safe.

If you want to run 30 spline axle shafts, you can change out the case. You would need to set up gears and all that, but if you're going to install this kit, then why not?

When I made my own full float setup (did not buy one, made all the components), i installed a 30 spline powerlock in an axle housing that might have been 10 spline or 19. Cant recall what it was.. I do know that my axle tubes are pretty small.

Regardless, the 30 spline case will fit in the axle housing if it was 10 or 19 spline originally. It does take different bearings than either of them.

Looking to put some kind of locker in the rear of my CJ. Again spline count is the question - 1966 tapered Dana 44 spline count?

Double check the spline count. A previous owner may have changed something. If you do have 10 spline the side gears can be changed to 19 spline pretty easily. Since you are going full float you can leave out the axle thrust block at the same time. Double check with Herm but it may need to come out to use his FF kit anyway.

Should be 19 spline but again, always double check.
