Finished the spark plug wiring yesterday. I had made the lower wire holders about a dozen years back when I milled out the valve cover spacers to fit the roller rockers. The rear high brackets were yesterdays work.

Oil filler plug-actually made this a few years back:

My pan oil leak is apparently fixed-new gasket set and a LOT of Loctite 598. The wire harness is hooked up, timing set, and this thing should be ready to fire.

I orchestrated an escape for the singular wide tread FC 150 axle in my bone pile today. I thought I better dissect it to make sure the housing was usable before acquiring any parts for this project. My 1960 edition FC FSM shows a 57" width for these but this axle is 59"-0. That is a little disappointing as my front axle is 56". This axle has 11x2" brakes with integral emergency brakes and 2 3/4" axle tubes. It is SOA and 2" springs. I will be removing the spring perches and shock mounts.

If the housing is not damaged (the pinion bearings are not tight), I still want to use it in the B. There was one surprise:

    And the usual bubba items---

If this works out according to plans, it will get jpet's custom full float spindles that will pass a full width 30 spline axle shaft, Dutchman's integral flanged 4130 shafts, and an ARB.

I disassembled the FC axle yesterday and, after sittiing at the bottom of the bone pile for more that 3 decades, didn't have high expectations of finding anything in there still usable. It was obvious Bubba wasn't afraid to work on the internals. After popping the axle nut caps off, the right side had no cotter key and the nut was loose. Needless to say I didn't have to use the hub puller on that side. The first thing noted when I got the cover removed was that the bearing caps were installed with a tire rotation in mind. Switched from side to side and also rotated 180 degrees. OK. Removed them. Turned the housing over and the Powr-Lok/ring gear plops out on the floor-zero perload on those bearings. I ran out of time before I could remove the pinion but it appears to have about 0.050" play which I strongly suspect was due to improper shim pack and no preload on it either.

On the positive side, the Powr-Lok seems to have survived just fine even though the ring gear is pitted in one area from sitting in water. Both gear and Powr-Lok are 1958 vintage.

would this be done if someone was thinking of using it as a front axle?

So random question. Are you going discs in the back and if so what will become if those 11" integral ebrake backing plates....:D

They are still Wagner manual adjust brakes. Not worth the effort IMO. Go Bendix.

I finished winnowing the Pro-Flo 2 wiring from the rest of the front end harness this morning-whew. I probably should not have totally integrated it into the system but I just couldn't accept all the extra wire looped here and there and the dual harness.

What a dozen years of progress at Edelbrock looks like. Pro-Flo 4 left, version 2 right.

As a slow learner, the Pro-Flo 4 harness is apart and being re-integrated. On a side note, if you need harness tape, this stuff just works perfect.

I finally got around to closely inspecting the FC axle housing today and found this:

There aren't any obvious other problems. Tubes are still straight and the right side shows no other problems from that crack. But still not what one should probably use in this application.

I'm going to feel guilty, but I'm going to swipe the axle out of my more or less still intact 60. Damn!

I wouldn't hesitate to run that. Grind it out nice and deep, weld it up and throw a gusset on there.

A royal pain in the posterior but finally finished all but the butt end (where the transmission/transfercase skid plate connects to it.

Pulled the new engine off the stand and started assembling the flywheel/clutch this afternoon. But before I did that, I sat it on a couple of wheel scales. A little disappointing but not too bad. 419 lbs (scales plus or minus 1%). The engine is totally complete except for the headers. Pulleys/belts/alternator/starter/injectors/fuel rails/throttle body/air cleaner-filter/fuel pressure regulator/distributor/and both the EFI harness and spark plug wire harness all included. I think this is about as light as one can build a Gen I sbc without resorting to a lot of really expensive custom parts.

The 8 and 5 lbs were my wood blocking/support.

The drivetrain hiatus is over for a bit. I ran into a major hiccup with the McLeod clutch at the end of May. It is a twin disc arrangement with one disc sandwiched between the flywheel and floater plate with the second in between the floater plate and the pressure plate. When I went to assemble it, there was insufficient clearance between the flywheel and floater plate for the forward disc to release. It all eventually went back to McLeod and yesterday it was returned. A whole new assembly and this time it went together as it should. They even balanced it to match the previous unit (which was balanced with the engine). The new unit has a few design changes. I'm still out $47 for the return shipping but all in all, McLeod rendered good service.

I'm not sure how this thing is going to work in a Jeep. Comparing the facing surface areas, the former 11" single plate was 122 and the McLeod about 180 square inches. It would make a good calculus problem but the friction coefficients and actual pressure plate pressures are unknown making it a moot point. My biggest concern is the floater plate and its more limited heat dissipation ability.

    Old unit:

Now if I can only get the splines/pilot bearing lined up---- Spent 3 hours this afternoon to no avail. I need another hand but I'm not going to be asking my wife.

How much weight is the flywheel floater and pressure plate?
I noticed there are no springs on hubs of the pressure plates is that a trade off for surface area or simply not needed with two disks?
