a must check item. when mine went bad I knew it as "molten" metal from the dimmer wire fell down on the top of my foot as I was driving down the beach. looked up in the dash and could see it glowing. my fault though. running a little bigger headlamps.

I have replaced the light switch 3 times in the past 42 years and the dimmer switch twice.

The first time I was driving east out of Colorado late at night with no moon and all of the lights went out. I couldn't see my hands on the steering wheel.

I have modified my wiring and added relays and upgraded wiring.

You've seen my rats nest wiring In other pic, i'm sure.

I have a tidy headlight relay installation on my CJ-6. maybe I should write it up.

Is there some sort of circuit board / sockets that you can mount to the firewall and then wire from? I see a lot of in-line sockets that sort of dangle freely in the wind, but I am considering going into a junkyard and pulling the fusebox for a current vehicle and making it work...

No, it's not complicated enough for a circuit board. Working right now; I'll put something up later.

You need two of these (similar or identical to what Jeff describes):

    relay (183 x 211).jpg
"12 VDC Waterproof 5-Pin Bosch Style Relay SPDT 30/40A with Metal Bracket" from www.parts-express.com!

    I suggest two sockets too.

    socket (190 x 146).jpg

"12 VDC 5-Pin Relay Socket For Bosch Type Relay" from www.parts-express.com!

Also about 10' of 10 ga automotive hookup wire, either a 14 ga fusible link or a 30 amp automotive circuit breaker, and your choice of connectors and terminals to link it all together. For a CJ using these sockets, you should not need any additional wire.
