Rear Box/tire Carrier Fab Idea?

    B2DD322C-59FD-47F7-B2DA-97537883D73D.jpeg My friend drew this up the other day. It’s just a box for storage and the spare will Mount on the back of it. I’ll have it be able to take it on and off in 15-20 minutes. Thoughts?

    JMO, I looked at doing something similar with my rear bumper mounted tire carrier (before I had the 2nd fuel tank - i was looking at carrying fuel cans between the tailgate and tire carrier - but I really did not like the aesthetic of how far out the tire carrier stuck out behind the tailgage. It wasn't so much a functional issue of departure angle/clearance etc - just look unpleasing to the eye. The short wheelbase of an ecj5 just doesn't lend itself to much rear length behind the bumper.

    yup...aesthetics are personal, but not my favorite. In the end, I chose to install a rear 15 gal tank between the frame rails as that was more fuel and easier to access (flip a switch) than separate cans. I modified a Tomken tire bumper tire carrier, and due to its design, the tire carrier (without additional room for fuel cans) is already a few inches off the tailgate, and even that bother's me a little bit. I've got issues....

    edit - I also noticed you have a pretty narrow tire, so the aesthetics a bit better - but I run a 10.5 wide tire, and that is just a few more inches of rear stick-out.

    Haha!, yeah, i honestly questioned my setup when i had my 10.5 spare mounted. Looked a bit too long.

    it’s my long term goal to ditch the underseat tank and install a later, larger rear-mounted 78 and up tank, so the tire carrier might get repurposed at that point to just water or water and other gear, maybe.

    I kept both tanks - 25 gal of fuel isn't really all that much in some places out west. Converting the fuel can carrier to water carrier is a good idea...I did that with the 5 gal fuel can carrier that I used to use. After the dual tank set-up, I got a water can that fits on the same carrier and I use it very occasionally when needed - such as the rubicon or wandering around utah. I usually have water filtration or purification stuff with me from my backpacking stuff - which actually worked really well on the rubicon this year, (not too mention lots of beer) so I don't use the water can all that often (and it does look funny hanging off the end of the spare tire).

    This is one of the best ideas I ever stole from you! :rofl:
    Last Rubicon trip I picked up a 2 gallon collapsible water jug and a hand pump water filter. Started off with the jug full and pumped as necessary.
    Really saves space in the jeep and ice chest!

    Another question, so how is my handling going to be affected by that weight behind the rear axle like that? It’s on almost brand new bds springs. I’d assume It’d ride like a caddy:D

    I've never noticed a difference in the ride quality/handling with a spare tire. I will say if you plan on running through the woods, in the right conditions it can be damaged.

    Most of my wheeling is desert running and fireroads. I’m gonna make it easy enough to take off so if I wanna do super technical wheeling itll be off less than 20 minutes.

    Some of the guys at the 2018 fall reunion had bed extensions and the spare on the side of the extension. I felt they lifted the front wheels way too much compared to the rest of the jeeps. They didn't flex at all just lifted the front off.

    Jabbed and his pump filter was a life saver for us in 19 too. I haven't picked one up but it's on my too do list very soon.

    My thought when planning the spare situation was pushing everything as low and forward as possible. The spare is 1/4" off the tailgate delete and the same from the bumper. The high lift forward but over the tailgate. This isn't the best way to do it I'm sure but with my soft springs I placed a heavy value on balance and not leveraging any more weight beyond the rear axle than necessary.

    This is what I did with my 5 when I had it.

    Looked OK in my opinion.
    As long as the rack is nice and strong to carry all the weight it works well.
