I'll try to get a video of the noise, but I've noticed that my transmission seems awfully loud. I don't know if I would describe the sound as grinding, however it is certainly noticeable. It is worth mentioning that the sounds seems different compared to the "whining" that I've heard from jeep transmissions in the past. I previously wasn't hearing this noise, but that is likely because I couldn't hear it over the deafening rattle coming from the gas tank. When I push the clutch in and coast the noise quiets, but doesn't go away completely. I'm not too sure where to start. Is this a transmission issue? transfer case? U Joints?

Yes... and if its at a 'coast', ie your just cruising around holding a constant speed, the intermediate shaft in the Tcase is the first suspect.

More info and recording will help a bunch.

I'll have to take it up and down my driveway tomorrow to test it out. Am I correct in assuming that if the noise continues while in motion, but not in gear....that the issue is something in the transfer case?

Agree with Warloch, intermediate shaft would be the first thing to check.

How fast can you go on your driveway? Intermediate shaft noise is most noticeable under a load.

Not saying it wouldn't be noticeable otherwise of course. I assume your oil levels are correct?

my driveway is a 1/2 mile dirt road, so i can take it up to 20+ mph.

I wish I could positively say yes to this, but this is still a relatively new jeep to me. I have not looked at any of the fluid levels in the transmission or transfer case. Sounds like it might be worth taking a peek.

I would check the levels, and then drain them. Separately. First the transfer case and check for metal shavings. Maybe strain it through a paint filter/cone. Do the same thing with the transmission.

Does the sound change based on ground speed, gear, accelerating, decelerating? Those might help us pinpoint the gremlin, or narrow the possibilities some.

It may have been flat towed without the rear driveshaft disconnected, transmission in neutral. Through the rear wheels, axle, driveshaft, transfer case...the transmission mainshaft is driven. Being in neutral, the cluster gear is NOT driven and therefore does not sling oil up to the mainshaft. Burns up the rear mainshaft and input bearings. Bad bearings fit your description so far, not the normal whine, not really grinding, but something spinning too loudly, bearings. This could also describe the t-case intermediate shaft as previously mentioned.

Might also be a good time to lube the speedometer cable.

My guess would be the input shaft bearing

My Jeep would make a Wha Wha sound on deceleration from 45 mph in third gear. I rebuilt my T 90 with a full rebuild kit, so it had to be coming from the TC. I put a Knovak kit in my Large Index D 18 and now everything is good. The speed limit in our Club is 20 mph everywhere, some of the roads are blacktop to control water runoff in the Cabin area. I can leave my Jeep in 2nd gear clutch out, and hold the speed to 20 mph or so down long hills and it is quiet and smooth, like it should be. I feel like All is Good now. I am sure the Intermediate Shaft was the problem, I hope this helps, Good Luck, Rick
