You can still buy or have made Flanged axles that will replace your tapered axles.............even 30 spline ones. I just did mine in my 1965 using the old housing.

:)This is really old school stuff.....................the axles were made by Dutchman & my contact there was Derek , they are 30 spline 4140 material.............I had to order them through Tom @ Foothill Offroad , 530-889-2021 another old dude that still has or new the correct parts list to make the old conversion work.

Sort of a side question, will the '70-'71 factory flanged axles fit in a '69 rear housing if you swap the 19 spline side gears for 30 spline gears?

Thanks terry99, if you don't mind my asking, what kind of $ are we talking about for this type of conversion? Did you disassemble/assemble everything yourself? Difficulty?

The base price for the axles alone in the standard steel material was $300 for the pair earlier this year.

Not hard to do just need all the new bearings / shims and a Press to put them on. The backing plate goes on the axle before the bearings ................looks confusing but really not.

I tried to put 70/71 flanged axles in a tapered axle housing. The housings are different. The housing on a flanged axle had a deeper recesses to except the bearing and seal. The 70/71 bearings will not fit in the housing. Unless you can find some sort of custom bearing. Also the axle end play has to be addressed. The tapered axle used the cross shaft to set end play and the flanged shaft doesn't need the cross shaft. Unless someone has come up with a new way of doing it. I don't think it can be done.

    Scott,

Take a look at the thread again.........70 Torino has a 67 CJ-5 with the D-44 rear axle w/ 2 piece tapered axles that he wished to swap out for a later 70-71 axle with flanged axles.

The point I made was that there was another option available: He could do as I did and have new flanged axles made that will fit in the old d-44 axle housing that previously had the old two piece tapered axle.....................and not as you mentioned take the 70-71 axles and try to make them fit.

Re: 1970-71 Flanged offset Dana 44 rear axle for CJ5

:)Ok as I mentioned before this is an old school trick that was used years back to upgrade the old D-44 rear axle that came with the 2 piece tapered axles............I have been away from this Jeep stuff for a long time so when I brought my 65-CJ out of storage after 28 years late last year the axle change was on my radar screen.........unfortunately all my old contacts ......will for a better choice of words were no longer around...........talked to a bunch of people off an on for several weeks and had pretty much given up until I talked to Dutchman one day about building some and was fortunate enough that a Smart guy named Derek remembered that years back they did in fact build axles for this application. (he did a search and that print is enclosed).
The puzzle still was not solved as he had no Idea what other parts were needed to complete this changeover. He later put me in touch with another old dude that he thought may have been involved in that back in the day............this was Tom from Foothill Offroad (530-889-2021) He also remembered about doing them back in the day but took a few weeks to get back to me to see if he could even find all his old notes..............Obviously not a real Hot Item when it comes to axle or 4-wheel drive parts sales..............the rest is history.

Following are pictures of the axles in 30 spline 4140 Ch/Mo and a print from Dutchman and a drawing from Foothill Offroad. There going in my 1965 CJ5 with rear powr-lok posi.......this is not being done as a rock crawler and I'm sure some may say this is overkill but my only goal here was to make this old Jeep a lot more capable than before.

These were purchased in February of this year............I understand that Dutchman has now moved to Idaho. Do they still do this Mod? ..............I have no Idea?
I would suggest that you get in touch with Tom and discuss your particular needs for your axle application.

    Good Luck!:D

Re: 1970-71 Flanged offset Dana 44 rear axle for CJ5

So...is their enough "stack" room for both the inner seal and the bearing ?
Did they furnish a Timken bearing number ? or is the orignal bearing still used ?
The original outer seal/retainer would seal on the wheel hub; when re-used per the diagram furnished, does it now ride on a seal surface on the axle ?
The shaft diameter appears larger than original (pictures most likely) all the way to the splines, yet it will pass thru the p/lock ?

If it works, it would be a welcome upgrade for the tapered axle guys, as the offshore replacement axles are junk.

    Thanks for sharing.

MODS: could you move the Dutchman discussion to technical so not lost...thanks

no. The factory flanged axle won't fit into an tapered housing. That's why the U bolts and spring hangers for the flanged axles are larger than the tapered axles

Well I have communicated with tarry99 and this appears to be the real deal.
Flanged axles for a tapered housing.
For any more specifics and or inquiries, you should contact the folks at Dutchman and/or Foothill Offroad as he's posted.

When I can get to my desktop tomorrow I will split this off. Contact Foothills Offroad directly. Dutchman is in the process of moving or have recently moved to Idaho from Portland, OR and may not be very helpful at this time.

Does anyone know the proper part numbers for the aforementioned swap? In addition to the dutchman shafts of course.
