My front seal leaks. There is a groove around the circumference of the shaft where the seal is positioned. I had looked into installing a speedi sleeve. As I remember, the sleeve was not long enough in length. Anyone have any luck with this ? Or should I look into a new input shaft for the trans.? 042.jpg

Have you thought about installing a sealed bearing there instead?

If the groove isn't too awfully deep, it may be salvageable. A good machine shop could tell you, likely chuck it in a lathe and polish the surface for a shop min charge.

If you do decide on replacing it, I believe Herm the Overdrive Guy is one of the few places you can find the T14 input shaft.

Recall that the Intermediate T-14 input shaft is different from the Early T-14 input shaft. Jeep PN 991059. The seal is a 941664. You should be able to find a replacement if that one is not salvageable.

Also possible you could put a thin bushing behind the seal in the bearing retainer to move the seal contact rearward. Depends on how deeply the seal seats in the retainer.

I never thought about that. How would it work?

With your fingernail you can barely feel the groove in the shaft. I had problems trying to remove the input shaft. So I lightly sanded the groove so there would not be any sharp (square) edges that might rip the seal. I did install a new seal. Thanks for the part numbers.

How would it work? Well just like any other bearing. Only diff is that it is sealed some on one side and some on both sides and keeps the oil from coming through the bearing. Some guys did that to the rear bearing on the T-90 to isolate the T-90 from a different transfer case that used a different oil than the T-90.
